Salve

Tessalia (Scotussa) emiobolo.

2123508299_3.EracleAgTessagliaemiobolo.jpg.57a8282710060bde10eabf0e02167a40.jpg

THESSALY, Skotussa. Last quarter of the 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7.5mm, 0.33 g, 2h). Head of Herakles facing / Σ-K-O from above r., down and l. circular, bunch of grapes hanging from a vine branch; all in circular incuse. See Nomos 4, 1335 (different dies) corr. [see note below]. Near VF, lightly toned; edges partly rough and both sides off centre; second known (?).
This particular coin reveals that Herakles is not wearing his lionskin headdress and also that the reverse type is in a circular and not in a square incuse.

Cilicia (zecca incerta): obolo (CNG 342).

1384719268_7.EracleAgCiliciaobolo.jpg.cb3296f6d27fc026fb65b6817c430de7.jpg

CILICIA, Uncertain. 4th century BC. AR Obol (10mm, 0.76 g, 7h). Head of Herakles facing slightly left, wearing lion skin headdress / Head of Aphrodite left, wearing earrings, necklace, and stephane decorated with palmette between two circles. Göktürk –; SNG France –; SNG Levante 242; SNG von Aulock –; SNG Copenhagen –; BMC –; Traité –; Brindley 443; Triton X, lot 384. Good VF, find patina, off center on obverse. Extremely rare. The chronology of this issue is unclear, and though it is traditionally ascribed to the 4th century BC, it could be towards the end of that time frame. If so, there is speculation that the types may be an allusion to Alexander and Roxanne.

Beozia (Tebe) statere.

336146506_11.EracleAgBeoziastatere.jpg.f24b36b486f1023764cd2c3dd5df3eef.jpg

BOIOTIA, Thebes. Circa 440-425 BC. AR Stater (11.89 g). Boiotian shield / Facing bearded head of Herakles, wearing lion's skin headdress; Q-E across lower field; all within square incuse. Head, Boeotia p. 35, class a = Imhoof-Blumer, Boeotiens, 129, pl. II, 129; Myron Hoard pl. A, 34; SNG Cop. 281; Traité III 234, pl. CC, 3; Pozzi 1423 = Pozzi (Boutin) 3256; Gulbenkian 500. Good VF, soft light- to medium-silvery grey tone, some light scratches on the obverse and a small rough area on the side of the incuse on the reverse. Much rarer reverse die than the previous coin. Of remarkably artistic workmanship. ($10,000)
Ex Leu 28 (5 May 1981), lot 103 (CHF 33,000 hammer).

A totally different rendering to the previous coin; at first glance this Herakles has a more down-to-earth, hairy look about him. Just the sort of apparition one would expect from this demi-god. And yet, closely observed, he slowly changes, becomes immensely powerful but at the same time human and benevolent. There is no ugliness or malice in this superb portrait, only strength, wisdom and the hint of sadness that comes with the inevitable immortality.
Estimate: $10000

1943552972_13.DioboloTarentumconAtenafacing462939.m.jpg.3d3e43ba3c77740edc07cf892c68b0db.jpg

Greek Coins
Magna Graecia, Calabria, Tarentum
Estimate: CHF 750.00
Diobol (Silver, 1.00 g 5), 280-228. Head of Athena, three-quarters facing to right, wearing triple crested helmet ornamented with Skylla; in tiny letters, to left and right of central crest, -. Rev. [] Herakles standing right, grappling lion; between his legs, ; to left, club downwards above amphora on base. HN III 1062. Vlasto 1437. Very rare. A most attractive piece; very well struck. Reverse slightly off-center, otherwise, good extremely fine.
