apollonia 4,423 Posted June 5, 2019 Report Share #1 Posted June 5, 2019 Gettone usato nel 1880 nella piantagione di zucchero di Wailuku, nelle Hawai (asta sixbid) Lot 4404. 1880 TOKEN Wailuku Plantation Token, 1 Real, XF40 PCGS. M. 2TE-6. Struck for the sugar plantation by a blacksmith, and probably used for payments to workers when Spanish-American silver was scarce. One real was equivalent to an eighth of a dollar. The tokens were recognized and accepted throughout the islands. This light golden-brown example is evenly struck and shows only a single hair-thin diagonal mark above the large P. The surfaces are permeated with tiny planchet imperfections, as made. Listed on page 431 of the 2020 Guide Book.HID05401242017. 2 Quote Report
apollonia 4,423 Posted June 5, 2019 Author Report Share #2 Posted June 5, 2019 Gettone usato nel 1871 nella piantagione di zucchero di Wailuku, nelle Hawai (asta sixbid). Lot 4403. (1871) TOKEN Wailuku Plantation 6 1/4 Cent, Narrow Starfish, XF40 PCGS. M. 2TE-4. The six cent tokens (approximately equal to a Spanish-American half-real) from the Wailuku Plantation are rarer than the 1871 12 1/2 cent varieties. The Broad Starfish variant is very rare, and even the Narrow Starfish VI token makes few auction appearances. The present golden-brown representative is noteworthy for an even strike. It is sharper, overall, than some higher-graded pieces. Contact is confined to a couple of ticks on the starfish. Listed on page 431 of the 2020 Guide Book.HID05401242017. apollonia 4,423 Posted June 5, 2019 Author Report Share #3 Posted June 5, 2019 Gettone usato nel 1871 nella piantagione di zucchero di Wailuku, nelle Hawai (asta sixbid). Lot 4402. 1871 12.5C Wailuku Plantation 12 1/2 Cents, Broad Starfish, VF35 PCGS. M. 2TE-3. 4.68 gm. Hawaii sugar plantations dealt with a shortage of silver coinage by striking their own copper tokens. They were typically denominated as a half real or one real, with the latter Spanish-American denomination equivalent to 12 1/2 cents. Among 1871 one-bit tokens, the Broad or Large Starfish variety is substantially rarer than its Narrow Starfish counterpart. This is a problem-free example with minor incompleteness of strike on the fraction and the 8 in the date. Listed on page 431 of the 2020 Guide Book.HID05401242017. apollonia 4,423 Posted June 5, 2019 Author Report Share #4 Posted June 5, 2019 Gettone usato nel 1871 nella piantagione di zucchero di Wailuku, nelle Hawai (asta sixbid). Lot 4401. 1871 12.5C Wailuku Plantation, 12 1/2 Cents, Narrow Starfish, XF40 PCGS. M. 2TE-2. Local blacksmiths struck most varieties of Hawaiian sugar plantation tokens. They are often unevenly impressed, but the present piece is well-defined except for the 8 in the date, and the stars west of the denomination. The tokens were used to pay workers in lieu of Spanish-American silver, with 12 1/2 cents equal to one real. This is an unblemished and generally golden-brown example with hints of charcoal patina in protected areas. Listed on page 431 of the 2020 Guide Book. Coins of Hawaii 1882 TOKEN Haiku Plantation One Rial Token MS63 Brown NGC. M. TE-15. The Haiku sugar cane plantation was located on Maui. Their tokens were superior in both design and quality to other Hawaiian plantation tokens of the era, which were mostly crude blacksmith productions. The denomination, equivalent to an eighth of a dollar, is spelled phonetically. This mahogany-brown and stone-gray example exhibits satin luster and lacks any mentionable marks. Listed on page 425 of the 2018 Guide Book. Census: 3 in 63 Brown, 2 finer (1/18).HID05401242017 1 Quote Report

apollonia 4,423 Posted June 25, 2019 Author Report Share #17 Posted June 25, 2019 Gettone della piantagione di Magraner a Lares, in Porto Rico (Heritage 3024). Tokens Hacienda Margarita Quintet, GH 273, 274 and 275 include CuNi issues in three denominations for this plantation owned by Magraner in Lares, western PR. Two of virtual identical design and 27.5mm size represent 5 and 10 Almudes as indicated in their obverse center. The third, at 32mm and heavier, is denominated in yet another obsolete measure which is not specified on the token: 2 Fanagas. This attractive trio are all mint state or very nearly so. An extra of each of the two smaller pieces, both of which are unattractively worn and damaged, include a 5Alm with a central cancellation punch-through and a 10Alm seemingly struck in tin or other light white substance. Sold as is, NO Return. From The Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group. Quote Report

Token Hacienda Salvacion Scalloped Quartet, GH 321 (two varieties), 323 and 324. Rio Prieto coffee plantation issued 28mm brass flans with atypical scalloped edges in several denominations. Three values are in this lot: 1 Almud, 1 Fanega (GH324) and 6 Almudes. A fourth piece is another 1 Almud which is likely brass but appears to the unscientific eye to be copper. Quality is VF with one much better. From The Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group. Quote Report
