apollonia 4,432 Posted March 17 Report Share #1 Posted March 17 Salve L’articolo di Jean David C. Boulakia “Lead in the Roman World” in American Journal of Archaeology Vol. 76, No. 2 (Apr., 1972) dà una panoramica dell’uso del piombo nel mondo romano.
Roman Provincial, Lot 893. An early Christian tessera ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. Tessera (Lead, 23 mm, 15.70 g, 12 h), circa 4th century. Laureate and bearded imperial male head to left. Rev. Φ-Λ Togate figure standing front, head to right, holding long cross in his left hand. Leu Web Auction 5 (2018), 337 corr. (same dies, but misdescribed). A very interesting and unusual piece. Very fine. This attractive tessera allows for a correction of the description in Leu Web Auction 5, where a die-matching piece in worse condition was misdescribed as being anepigraphic and late Hellenistic. However, the present example clearly shows some additional features, most notably that the obverse head is laureate and hence imperial, and that the reverse figure is holding a long cross and thus early Christian. Last but not least, the tessera also bears a reverse legend of Φ-Λ - perhaps a Greek date of 530, but more likely an abbreviation of an uncertain name.

Roman Provincial SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Apamea. Tessera (Lead, 22 mm, 6.40 g, 12 h), CY 24 = 43/2 BC. Bare imperatorial head to right. Rev. [AΠAM]EΩN / [THΣ] IE[P]AΣ - [K]AI AΣYΛ[OY] Elephant walking right; in field to right, ΔΚ. A very unusual piece of great historical interest. Some corrosion, otherwise, good fine. The date 24 on the reverse of this interesting tessera is likely to the Pompeian Era, which dates it to 43/2 BC, a year which saw the expulsion of Quintus Caecilius Bassus from Apameia by Gaius Cassius Longinus and a major change in the coinage of the city, away from the old autonomous types of Zeus/elephant towards the Athena/Nike issues. Unlike the civic reverse, the head on the obverse of this tessera looks decidedly imperatorial and may represent either Bassus, or more likely, Longinus, one of the two leading assassins of Julius Caesar. apollonia 4,432 Posted March 19 Author Report Share #11 Posted March 19 Tessera di Antonino Pio (?) tipo busto di Antinoo/busto di Serapis-Helios (CNG Electronic Auction 485). Roman Provincial: Est. $100. SOLD $250 EGYPT, Antinoöpolis. Circa 2nd-3rd centuries AD. PB Tessera (21.5mm, 4.07 g, 6h). Dated RY 8 of Antoninus Pius(?) (AD 144/145). Draped bust of Antinoüs right, wearing Hem-Hem crown; L H (date) across field / Draped bust of Serapis-Helios right; L H (date) across field. Wilding 8c (this example); Köln 3579; Dattari (Savio) 6445. Gray-brown patina with light earthen deposits. Fine. Ex Roma E-Sale 41 (2 December 2017), lot 475. Denise Wilding provides the first comprehensive examination of the lead tokens of Antinoüs, cataloging a number of otherwise unpublished types. Noting that they appear most often with the years 2, 4, 6, and 8, she suggests that the pieces were a continuation of the bronze coinage in the name of Antinoüs issued under Hadrian in years 19 and 21, with the lead pieces bearing regnal dates of Antoninus Pius. The tokens were likely issued in connection with biennial festivities of the cult of Antinoüs. For more information, see: Wilding, Denise. apollonia 4,432 Posted March 21 Author Report Share #13 Posted March 21 Tessera di Alessandria d’Egitto con interessante iconografia (Obolos 14). Roman Provincial EGYPT, Alexandria. Circa 2nd-3rd Century AD. Tessera (Lead, 20.5 mm, 2.96 g, 6 h). MEMΦIC (retrograde) Priest standing facing with his face turned to left presenting offerings to the statue of Apis. Rev. Nilus seated to right, holding reed and cornucopia; crowned by Alexandria standing left before him. Dattari-Savio 11614 (this piece). A fascinating tessera with interesting iconography. Extremely fine. From a Swiss collection, ex Naville 30, 2 April 2017, 372 and from the Dattari Collection. The reverse depiction of Alexandria crowning the Nile reminds us that as Alexandria was built at the mouth of the Nile, in a way the city itself is the crown, the jewel of the Nile. Thus, Alexandria is here crowning Nilus both metaphorically and literally. Starting price: 300 CHF - Result: 950 CHF Quote Report
