Sweden let go of Norway in 1905, without bloodshed. But things were perhaps more tense than history usually remembers. Sweden sent several thousand soldiers to the border, and there were some excited conversations within the Swedish government about whether to force the Norwegians to stay.

But the Norwegians were nearly unanimous in their desire to leave, and sent their own soldiers to the border. The Swedes relented.

“Norway’s Independence Completed, 1905” is the translation for the reverse inscription surrounded by the ring of clasped hands on this 1906 2-kroner commemorative, sometimes called the “Watch on the Border” commemorative.

Until recently I would have attributed the whitish band across the obverse to the coin having had a piece of adhesive tape across its surface, but now—or so I’ve read—these kind of marks are more likely the result of a ribbon in some sort of presentation case. A much more palatable explanation!

These Norwegian 2-kroner commemoratives come in 3 distinct varieties. This is the 1906 version, with the large coat-of-arms. They also come in two 1907 versions, one with swords and one without swords.

A question about these 2-kroner coins: can anyone tell more of their story? And the reason for the design differences?

In english: :P

The 1907 “Border watch” coin has two rifles and a sword in the reverse and was minted for the border watchmen, involved in the 1905 movement for independence

The other two types (1906 large shield and 1907 small shield) haven’t any weapons. I don’t know why the shield was reduced in size; I think for technical or aesthetic reasons and not for a mistake in the design that is almost the same.

Many thanks, orlando10, for the help. And thanks too for gently pointing out the main devices on the one 1907 reverse are not swords, but crossed rifles. (I was engrossed in the bayonets and the cavalry sword, I guess!)

The breakdown by type, with a Krause catalog price in VF(BB) for comparison purposes only:

1) 1906 “Independence” 2-kroner, with large coat-of-arms, KM363, mintage 100,000; VF(BB) $60

2) 1907 “Independence” 2-kroner, with small coat-of-arms, KM365, mintage 54,600; VF(BB) $100

3) 1907 “Watch on the Border” 2-kroner, with small coat-of-arms and crossed rifles, KM366, mintage 27,500; VF(BB) $350

All 3 types are 31mm in diameter, of .800 silver, and weigh 15.00 grams.

As orlando10 says, #3 was given to Norwegian soldiers who served at the border, and I have also been told that many of the soldiers had loops welded onto their coins for wear as military decorations. (Which will be good to know if I ever have a chance to buy one—I’ll definitely check the edge of the coin for signs of a removed loop.)
