Dovremmo essere a Babilonia, ai tempi di Seleuco I Nicatore, ca. 311-300 a.C.

Gli stateri Ex-Jewelry con evidenti segni di montatura sono svalutati rispetto agli esemplari integri, che nelle aste attuali hanno stime indicativamente tra 1000 e 10000 Euro, in relazione al grado di conservazione e alla rarità.

Il fatto è però che gli stateri usati come gioielli sono nella maggior parte dei casi falsi.

Di nulla. Se vuole togliersi una curiosità, con le dovute cautele dovrebbe liberare la moneta (o meglio, farla liberare da un orafo) dai ganci che la tengono imprigionata nella montatura, pesarla e misurare il diametro. Il confronto con i dati ponderali e geometrici di uno statere autentico può già dare una risposta sull’autenticità del pezzo.

Houghton, in CSE II, notes that Seleukid silver plated (or fourrée) tetradrachms are rarely encountered. “Although plated coins are described as ‘ancient forgeries,’ it is difficult to be certain that criminal enterprise was responsible for all the known plated specimens.
