Monete di Lucera e Canosa. Nuovo sito web.

Please excuse me for writing in English.

I have written several new web-pages about the Roman coins of Lucera and Canusa. I have arranged the coins exactly according to Crawford's Roman Republican Coinage. But I have also added my personal comments, as well as some corrections. I have also published many new coin varieties that were, until today, unpublished:

Luceria L, RRC 43

Luceria L, RRC 97

http://andrewmccabe.ancients.info/RRC97.html

Luceria LT, RRC 98

Luceria P, RRC 99

Canusium CA, RRC 100

Many people know that I am interested in the coins of Luceria. I have often criticized the arrangement of these coins, which was proposed by Michael Crawford, in his book Roman Republican Coinage. So it is surprising that today I publish the exact arrangement that was proposed by Michael Crawford. I will explain why. Crawford sorted the coins of Luceria according to weight. Crawford did not consider style. A friend told me that it is not difficult to use Crawford's arrangement. When he said this, I realized that anything can be arranged by weight. For example, any group of coins can be divided into those which weigh above 10 grams, and those which weigh below 10 grams. It is easy, but it is not a good way, for a numismatist, to arrange coins. The arrangement in Crawford's book "Roman Republican Coinage" mixes coins of very different designs and shapes. And his arrangement separates coins that should be together. But because Crawford uses weight to sort the coins, other people do not find it difficult.

The problem is that there exists no book or website that correctly shows the arrangement by Michael Crawford. and that comments on his arrangement. I hope that my new website will fix this problem. I have tried to show the coinage exactly as described in Crawford's catalogue. I have tried to show the same coins, as examples, which he mentions in his book. This is a good place to start new work. So I have made many comments on the arrangement. I have made some corrections. I show many new varieties. And I discuss the coinage.

On this new website, I have not yet arranged the coinage according to my own ideas. I will arrange the coins, myself, in the future. However, I have made a comment at every place where I think it is necessary to change the arrangement. This will make it easier to publish a new arrangement in the future.

Roberto Russo, who died earlier this year, also researched the coins of Luceria. He observed many new facts. I wish to combine my own research, with the observations of Roberto, and to publish a new arrangement in the future.

But for today, this is the arrangement by Michael Crawford. I have added my comments to his arrangement:

Very interesting!

Already observing the rearrangement of issues according to Crawford with new variants, it is possible to remarke some inconsistency of Crawford his self, entailing the necessity for a rational and different arrangement of Roman Lucera and Canosa coinage.

I hope that someone can help Andrew both signalling new variants in his personal collection and suggesting possible correction.

Best regard

Alberto
