Abraham Lincoln, 150 anni fa

Oggi sono il sesquicentennial della morte di Abraham Lincoln. È di circa 3:20AM a Washington, D.C. Nel 1865, prima dell'ora legale, sarebbe stato circa 2:20AM. In questo momento, 150 anni fa, presidente Lincoln era ancora vivo, ancora lottando, ma non non c'era nessuna speranza. Egli aveva solo poco più di cinque ore a vivere.

 

 

Nel 1909, sul centenario della sua nascita, il primo cent di Lincoln furono emesse dagli Stati Uniti. Essi erano popolarissimi dal primo momento che il pubblico li ha visti, e spesso venivano chiamati "Le monete di emancipazione".

 

Come molte delle persone qui sul Forum sa già, c'era una polemica circa le iniziali dello stilista e sono stati rimossi più tardi nel 1909. La moneta di cui sopra è la prima volta, "con V.D.B."

 

Abraham Lincoln ha avuto un inizio davvero umile nella vita, e quindi la scelta della moneta da 1-cent umile per fargli onore è sempre sembrato abbastanza perfetto per me. Naturalmente questo centesimo—come l'uomo—è venuto un senso lungo. Prevedo che ora deve essere la moneta più comune nella storia del pianeta.

Today is the sesquicentennial of the death of Abraham Lincoln. It is about 3:20AM in Washington, D.C. In 1865, before Daylight Savings Time, it would have been about 2:20AM. At this moment, 150 years ago, President Lincoln was still alive, still struggling, but there was no hope. He had only a little more than five hours to live.

 

 

In 1909, on the centennial of his birth, the first Lincoln cents were issued by the United States. They were hugely popular from the very first moment the public saw them, and they were often called “The Emancipation Coins.”

 

As many of the folks here on the Forum know already, there was a controversy about the designer’s initials and they were removed later in 1909. The coin above is of the first time, “with V.D.B.”

 

Abraham Lincoln had a genuinely humble start in life, and so the choice of the lowly 1-cent coin to do him honor has always seemed quite perfect to me. Of course this penny—like the man—has come a long way. I expect by now it must be the most common coin in the planet’s history.
