L'orsa ( maggiore ) di Mantinea

Dalla rete, 2 dei rarissimi trioboli della monetazione arcaica di Mantinea in Arcadia .

Queste prime monete della città, raffigurano al diritto la ninfa Callisto nella sua trasformazione, forse ad opera di Zeus, forse di Era, nell'orsa che avrà poi posto tra le costellazioni celesti come Orsa Maggiore .

Il primo triobolo è stato venduto alla Nomos 2 del 2010 e ripresentato e rivenduto alla Nomos 3 & 4 del 2011 con la foto del rovescio ruotata.

Nessun cenno alla provenienza dall’asta dell’anno precedente.

Bear walking left on ground line; on the middle of her body, countermark of a star within an oval punch. Rev. - Three acorns triangularly arranged in a triangular incuse, with oak leaf to left. BMC 4 (with countermark). Traité I 1239, pl. XXXVIII, 20 (with countermark). Extremely rare. Nicely toned. Porous surfaces, otherwise, very fine.  Ex Münzen Auktion Essen 66, 1 December 1993, 89.

Bear walking left on ground line of pellets; on her shoulder, countermark of a star within an oval punch. Rev. - divided by a dolphin swimming transversely to the lower right; in dotted square within incuse square. Jameson 1261 (this coin). MG 231. SNG Fitzwilliam 3881 (same dies). Traité I 1238, pl. XXXVIII, 19 (same dies?). Vermeule 110 (this coin). Extremely rare. Nicely toned, a lovely example perfectly centered. Good very fine.  From the collections of Bryn Mawr College and E. W. King (bought from Jacob Hirsch in 1949 for $110), Christie’s New York, 11 December 1992, 710, and from the collections of R. Jameson and Consul E.F. Weber, Hirsch XXI, 16 November 1908, 2046. The countermark on this coin is also found on the slightly later piece in the following lot, and almost certainly was done in Mantinea since the mark clearly identifies the bear as the constellation Kallisto.
