Uno dei più bei contorniati conosciuti.

Contorniates. Late 4th century AD. Æ (38mm, 30.08 g, 12h). Half-length figure of charioteer right, wearing riding gear, holding transverse goad in right hand and horse by the bridle in left; helmet in left field / Charioteer standing facing, head left, in spread quadriga facing with richly caparisoned horses; he holds a laurel wreath and goad in right hand and palm frond in left. Alföldi, Kontorniat 484. EF, exceptional, untouched green patina, traces of earthen deposits. Certainly one of the finest contorniates in existence. Spectacular compositions on both sides.

Non e' un soggetto comune come si potrebbe pensare , anzi tutt' altro ; ad esempio nel medagliere vaticano Antinoo non e' presente ne' come medaglione ne' come contorniato , ed e' una collezione tra le piu' ricche al mondo . Invece "comuni" come contorniato sono Alessandro Magno e sua madre Olimpiade .

Si puo' ritenere "normale" una diffusione di contorniati coniati in zecche orientali essendo Antinoo nato in Bitinia .

Forse esiste un solo esemplare di medaglione coniato da Adriano a Roma , ma non conosco se sia coevo ai personaggi oppure sia un contorniato postumo.

Apro una parentesi tornando all’esemplare del post # 7 stimato 1500 USD e aggiudicato a 1600 USD nella Triton XII del 2009, quando nell’asta di provenienza The New York Sale 9 del 2005 era stato stimato 6000 USD.

Rimanendo in tema Antinoo , il Montenegro valutava nel 1988 queste emissioni cosi' : MB 350.000 , BB 1.000.000 , SPL 2.000.000 , di Lire .

Se avessi a disposizione queste cifre , magari per un BB , personalmente non comprerei mai un contorniato neanche per un MB , parere personale .

In Egypt, the cult of Antinoüs saw him as an avatar of Hermes-Thoth, a messenger between mortals and the gods. Elsewhere, he was seen in another guise, as Hermes Nomios, or the "Herdsman". As defender of the herd or flock, Hermes brought forth fecundity and prosperity, just as Antinoüs would bring good fortune to those who did him honor.

Questo medaglione in onore di Antinoo è interessante perché il tipo di diritto che raffigura il giovane lo descrive chiaramente come un eroe, uno status che comportava una forma di culto inferiore a quella normalmente concessa a un dio totale. D'altra parte, la capra e il caduceo sul rovescio indicano la sua associazione con Ermes, che era senza dubbio un dio dell'Olimpo. La legenda del rovescio riporta che il medaglione fu prodotto da un certo Polemone come dedica. Presumibilmente Polemone fornì il metallo e ottenne i conii per l'emissione.

Triton XXI, Lot: 96. Estimate $50000. Sold for $47500. 

This coin is Giovanni’s favorite coin in his collection, and he used it as the cover coin for his book, Alexandria In Nummis. He also considers it the finest known example in private hands. Giovanni purchased this coin from Dr. Piero Beretta (1925-1994), and as he relates in his book, it was a “financial sacrifice” in 1976 to purchase this coin from Dr. Beretta, who was a classical art teacher with “exquisite” taste. Dr. Beretta was one of the first collectors to have the opportunity to purchase coins from the Dattari collection when it was dispersed, and he was able to purchase some of the best and finest pieces in the collection.

One of the most remarkable cults of the ancient world was that which grew up around the youth Antinoüs, a boy from Claudiopolis in Bithynia who attracted the attention of the emperor Hadrian. Hadrian apparently had little love for his wife Sabina, and chose instead to shower favors on the handsome youth, whom he apparently chanced upon during a visit to Bithynia. During the emperor’s tour of Egypt in October AD 130, Antinoüs fell into the Nile and drowned, an event resulting in suspicions of suicide or ritual murder. The distraught Hadrian had his favorite immediately deified, and the worship of Antinoüs became an important facet of the imperial cult. Within a few years, the worship of Antinoüs was far larger than the worship of another “cult” figure of the period – Jesus Christ.

Excessively rare. A marvellous portrait of Antinous of extraordinary style, undoubtely one of the finest representation of the favourite of Hadrian. Superb green patina and the reverse from a weak die, otherwise about extremely fine / good very fine.

Questo grande e imponente oggetto, opportunamente chiamato "medaglione provinciale", è stato coniato nel luogo di nascita di Antinoo, Bithynium-Claudiopolis, in Bitinia. Il rovescio lo mostra mentre avanza a sinistra, verso una pianta alta, simile a un giunco; accanto a lui c'è un toro al pascolo, e sopra una stella. Il toro è stato inteso da alcuni come simbolo della morte di Antinoo, e la stella, ovviamente, come simbolo della sua divinità. Anche se Antinoo viene solitamente descritto qui nelle vesti di Ermes, l'opinione di Wroth che sia "una rappresentazione di Antinoo come il pastore divinizzato di Bithynium - un luogo famoso per i suoi pascoli" è più attraente. Egli ha tratto particolare ispirazione per la sua visione dalla stella sopra la testa di Antinoo. Da notare anche che il pedum (lagobolon) che Antinoo tiene in mano, per quanto destinato principalmente ad essere lanciato contro le lepri per ucciderle, è spesso descritto in modo più generale come un bastone da pastore. Auf der Rückseite des Medaillons wird der Stratege Polemon genannt, der die Prägung der Medail­lone in Smyrna finanziert hat, um seine Loyalität gegenüber Kaiser Hadrian zu demonstrieren. Klose (S. 17f.) verbindet den auf der Rs. der Münze nach rechts schreitenden Stier mit dem Kult der Kybele. Antinoos sei hier mit Attis, dem Geliebten der großen kleinasiatischen Muttergöttin, gleich­gesetzt worden.
Twenty-four minting cities in Asia Minor issued sizeable medaillons of Antinous dating from well after his death. They were designed for commorative purposes. The best among them were rare and superbly worked pieces for presentation to favourated individuals in the games, the cult and the cities. Civic worthies like Polemon of Smyrna decicated the medaillons to their compatriots paying for the engraving and even the whole production.

Sul rovescio del medaglione è raffigurato Bellerofonte nudo sotto il mantello che sta domando Pegaso, il cavallo alato nato dal terreno bagnato dal sangue versato quando Perseo tagliò il collo di Medusa. Secondo un’altra versione del mito, sarebbe balzato direttamente fuori dal collo tagliato del mostro, insieme a Crisaore, il gigante armato di spada d’oro dall'etimologia del nome.

Gli ultimi anni della vita di Bellerofonte furono pieni di disgrazie e quando, pieno d'orgoglio, osò volare con Pegaso verso l'Olimpo, quasi fosse un immortale, Zeus mandò un tafano che punse il cavallo sotto la coda facendolo sgroppare. Bellerofonte precipitò in un roveto sulla terra dove vagò a lungo, zoppo, cieco, sempre evitando le strade battute dagli uomini, e la storia della sua morte non ci è stata tramandata.
