KINGS of MACEDON. Philip II. 359-336 BC. Æ Unit (15mm, 6.03 g, 4h). Uncertain mint in Macedon. Diademed head of Apollo right / Youth on horseback riding right; pentagram below. SNG ANS 858. Good VF, dark brown patina, struck on a slightly oval flan.

The obverse of this coin features the head of the god Apollo, who became the tutelary deity of Philip II in 353 BC during the Third Sacred War. Vowing he would fight on behalf of the god, whose sacred Treasury at Delphi had been stolen, precipitating the conflict, he used the war as an opportunity to expand his control in Greece. The rider on the reverse, similar to the reverse of his tetradrachms, ostensibly extolls his victory in the horse race at Olympia in 356 BC. However, the reverse also recalls the earlier Macedonian royal types, possibly an attempt to emphasize his Macedonian ancestry.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΠΕΡΡΑΙ-ΒΩΝ, Hera seated right on throne, holding scepter; monogram to inner right. BCD Thessaly I 1246 (same rev. die); BCD Thessaly II 560 (same dies); HGC 4, 155 (same dies). Good VF. Struck on an oval flan.

Good VF, dark brown patina with earthen highlights, struck on a compact, somewhat oval flan. A particularly artistic rendering of Apollo.

Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / BAΣIΛEΩΣ [ΦIΛ]IΠΠOY, Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; ΠY throne. Unpublished. Oval flan, little off center, scratches in field on reverse. Good VF. High relief. Apparently unique.
The style of this issue, its high relief portrait, and the presence of the royal title are consistent with issues struck during the first satrapy of Seleukos I.

SICILY, Syracuse. Dionysios I. 405-367 BC. Dekadrachm (Silver, 43.12 g 1), An unsigned work by the engraver Kimon, c. 405-400. Quadriga galloping to left, driven by a female charioteer who leans forward, with a kentron in her right hand and the reins in her left; above left, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue below, panoply of arms on pedestal inscribed with [ΑΘΛΑ]. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ Head of Arethusa to left, her hair bound in an ampyx with a net behind, and wearing a pendant earring and a pearl necklace; around her head, four dolphins: two swimming towards each other before, one swimming downwards behind, and one nestling under the neck truncation. Jongkees 8. SNG ANS -. A very rare die combination. Beautifully toned, very well preserved, and struck on a curiously attractive oval flan. Extremely fine.

This coin is quite stunning: the toning, condition and the metal quality join to produce a coin that is unquestionably a work of art on the highest level. This must have come from one of the great hoards found in the late 19th or early 20th centuries, and probably went through the hands of Jakob Hirsch, as did so many other pieces of equal importance. Even this coin’s unusual shape makes it special and adds to its appeal.

La melagrana e Side nel mito.

Una leggenda associa questo frutto ad Orione, l’aitante cacciatore che aveva sposato Side, una giovane donna tanto bella quanto vanitosa. Convinta d’essere più bella perfino di Era, la sfidò e venne punita dal marito che la scaraventò nell’Ade dove si trasformò in pianta di melograno.

Una variante di questa leggenda racconta che Side fosse giovane e bella donna che si uccise per sfuggire agli oltraggi del padre. Gli dei pietosi fecero crescere un melograno sulla sua tomba, mentre il padre venne mutato in nibbio, un uccello che mai si posa sulle fronde del melograno.
