Information requested - Angola 1992

Hi, this message is in English because I live in Holland and don't speak Italian.

Today I uploaded 2 pictures of a coin/medal at http://numismatica-italiana.lamoneta.it/moneta/W-F2614/21

The story goes that a familymember received this coin from the pope in honour of his spiritual work. The familymember was missionary, director of Caritas Angola and spokesmen, of all Portugese spoken countries, in Rome (since 1978). He is deceased so I can't ask him for details.

Can anyone tell me more about this coin? Like are they registred, like to whom they were given, how many are minted, etcetera.

Hello Dianne, welcome to the forum. This is definitely a medal, in gilt bronze, minted on 04/06/1992 to commemorate the Pope's trip to the African countries of Angola and S. Tome e Principe. The obverse, made by Massimo Facchin, has the pope's mitred bust. The reverse, made by Massimo Facchin and E. Granero, has Jesus welcoming a kneeled St. Peter.

This is the only information we have about the medal, which I translated from the page where you uploaded the photos (thank you). It is interesting to know that the medal was distributed to people who had contributed to the spiritual cause of the Church. There is a clear connection between the countries mentioned in the medal and those where your relative was making his missionary work. Maybe some other user can provide you with more info.

Posso solo aggiungere che la medaglia è pubblicata sul Catalogo dell'esposizione al Castello Reale di Varsavia N° 0879 e da questo testo (dalle immagini del testo) sono state tratte le informazioni per redigere la scheda in Catalogo.

I can only add that the medal is published in the Catalogue of exposure to the Royal Castle in Warsaw N° 0879 and from this text (from the images of the text) have been taken to prepare the information on in the card catalog.
