Winged man-headed bull walking to right. Rev. Triskeles. Mørk-holm-Zahle 78 (this coin). Traité 278, pl. XCVI, 30. Extremely rare. Toned. Nearly extremely fine. Ex Hess-Leu 316 December 1966, 480. In designing their coins the Lycians primarily drew upon a whole repertoire of Greek types, familiar to them from the coins of their neighbors, as well as from sources further to the east and south, including Egyptian influences coming through Phoenicia, and the art of their Achaemenid Persian overlords. While man-headed bulls representing powerful river gods commonly appeared on Greek coins (especially in Magna Graecia and Sicily, as above, 2-3, 48-54, etc.), the creature here has nothing to do with them. Rather, this powerful beast is a direct copy of the huge stone Assyrian and Achaemenid winged man-headed bulls which stood as guardians at the doors and gates of the palaces of the east, and can now be seen in museums in London, Berlin and elsewhere. Whether full sized sculptures of this type could actually be found in any of the palaces of the Lycian dynasts is unknown, but the accuracy with which it was portrayed shows that the Lycian engraver responsible for this coin must have been familiar with their iconography. ILLUSTRAZIONE: LAMASSU ASSIRO.
