Vagi 1312.Condition: Minor edge scrape, otherwise, Good extremely fine.Estimate:26000 – Provenance: Ex Numismatic Fine Arts XXVII, 4 December 1991, 124 and from the collections of A. Moretti, Numismatic Fine Arts XXII, 1 June 1989, 54 and E. von Schulthess, ESR, Hess-Leu 17, 23 March 1961, 147.Note: Marcus Ulpius Traianus came from an Umbrian family that had moved to Spain and prospered. He returned to Rome and served under Nero, commanding the Tenth Legion during the Jewish War. He was made consul by Vespasian in 70 and governor of Syria from 73-77. He defeated a Parthian attack in 75 (for which he received the triumphal regalia, and during which his son, the future emperor, served as his legate) and then became proconsul of Asia (79-80). He seems to have died before 100, perhaps soon after his son became emperor, and at some point, probably late in Trajan’s reign, he was deified. This coin, in fact, shows both of Trajan’s fathers: on the right is the bare-headed bust of Trajan Pater, the consular, and on the left is his adoptive father, the emperor Nerva.
