1915 Guatemalan provisional

Recommended Posts

Here’s a Guatemalan coin that doesn’t show up in my neighborhood too often. Of copper, 24.5mm in diameter, with a weight of 2.9 grams.

Low-value in the Provisional series of 1915 was this “bit,” a 12½-centavo piece that was the follow-on to the copper-nickel 1-real coins that were produced through 1912. So not only was this a provisional piece, part of a series that held the fort while Guatemala’s currency issues could be worked out in more permanent fashion, it was also a transitional piece that converted the old Spanish-descended 1-real into its equivalent in decimal centavos.
