Alexandria saw an immense output of coinage during the eighth year of Antoninus Pius’s reign. The Zodiac drachms, mythological types, and a host of issues for the nomes appeared that year. One explanation for this activity centers on the celebration of the renewal of the Great Sothic cycle, the point when the star Sothis (Sirius) rises on the same point on the horizon as the sun. This cycle of 1461 years began early in the reign of Pius in AD 139, and apparently prompted a renewal in the ancient Egyptian religion, while the coin types also stressed the connections to the Greco-Roman Pantheon. Con Saturno I Latini identificavano Cronos, il più giovane dei Titani della mitologia greca, figlio di Urano (il Cielo) e di Gea (la Terra), che secondo Esiodo mutilò il padre in quanto teneva in prigionia i figli per timore di perdere la signoria del mondo a causa di uno di essi. E’ raffigurato con un falcetto in spalla in quanto con questo oggetto fabbricato dalla Terra al proprio interno evirò Urano, gettando l’organo amputato nel mar Egeo e prendendo il posto del padre alla guida del mondo. Sempre secondo Esiodo, dalla spuma del mare fecondata dai genitali di Urano in primavera nacque Afrodite (dal greco afros, la spuma), la dea della bellezza e dell'amore identificata dai Romani con Venere. Essa aveva anche l'appellativo di Urania, perché ancora figlia del Cielo. Cita

The name of this city and types depicted on this coin refer to Uranos, the divine personification of the sky and scarcely known in cult. From Hesiod (Theogony 126ff.) we know he was produced by Gaia, became her consort, but hating her children he caused them to remain confined within her. Gaia in revenge instigated his castration by their son Cronos and cast his severed genitals into the sea which engendered Aphrodite. Cita

Appena emerse dalle onde, su una conchiglia di madreperla, Zefiro l'aveva spinta sulla riva dell'isola di Cipro: da qui gli appellativi di Anadiomene, l'emersa, e di Ciprigna. Appena la dea mosse i primi passi sulla spiaggia, i fiori sbocciarono sotto i suoi piedi, e subito le vennero incontro le Ore, le Cariti, Peito, la persuasione, Potos, il desiderio, Himeros, la brama, per accoglierla, onorarla e servirla. La vestirono con un vestito bellissimo e una cintura, le misero boccole d'oro e di gemme alle orecchie, braccialetti ai polsi e una collana splendente al collo. Dal cielo arrivò un carro di gemme, tirato da due colombe, sul quale la dea salì e fu così assunta in Cielo. Zeus la diede in moglie ad Efesto; ma la sua idea non fu delle più felici; non si può unire in matrimonio la dea più bella con il dio più brutto. Afrodite veniva rappresentata nel fiore della sua giovinezza, avvenente, graziosa, tutta ingioiellata e sorridente. Il suo volto era ovale, delicato e gentile; i suoi occhi grandi, tremuli, avevano uno sguardo soave e languido che ispiravano tanta dolcezza. Sopra il vestito portava una cintura magica, dove erano raccolti tutti i vezzi, le grazie, il sorriso che promette ogni gioia, i teneri dialoghi degli innamorati, i sospiri che persuadono e il silenzio espressivo. Erano sacri ad Afrodite: tra le piante, il mirto, la rosa, il melo, il papavero; tra gli animali, il passero, la lepre, il cigno, il delfino e soprattutto la colomba. Dalle sue varie unioni ebbe alcuni figli: dal troiano Anchise ebbe Enea; dal dio Dioniso ebbe Imene, il dio delle feste nuziali; da Ares ebbe due figli terribili, Eros, amore, e Anteros. I poeti greci raccontano che quando Afrodite ebbe Eros, si lamentò con la dea Temi perchè il figlio non cresceva; Temi le rispose che il bambino non sarebbe cresciuto finchè non avesse avuto un fratello. Allora Afrodite diede vita ad Anteros che significa "colui che ricambia l'amore"; così i poeti con questa graziosa leggenda hanno voluto dire che l'amore, per poter crescere, deve essere ricambiato.
