SI Bronzi di Akragas

One coin just appeared in the next Gorny auction.

First time i see such type. Not in CNS, not in HGC and also not in Buceti. One globus bellow fish is completely unknow.

Weight over 4 grams is unusual.

Such green/red Patina is also suspicious.

What to think ?

Hello @planetetour,

The type is closely similar to an exemplar in the Moruzzi shop, but the globus/pellet has a different position.

I agree that the patina of the G&M example looks strange, maybe because of the photograph?

Sicily, Akragas. Ca. 425/0-410/6 B.C. Æ onkia (16 mm, 3.73 g, 2 h). AK-RA, eagle standing left on fish, head turned to right / Crab; below, fish right above pellet. CNS -; SNG ANS 1060. Rare and not listed in the standard reference on Sicilian bronze coins. Green and brown patina. Fine.

Av. Sehr schön. Rv. Fast vorzüglich.

I have not studied this particular akragantine issue, very interesting, but all known specimens are too different to be a forgery work (different dies).

They seem to be original. The Gorny specimen (the first) appears to be a few tooled, but there are traces of red cuprite and at least the flan is ancient....

Salve, Personalmente l'oncia di Akragas la ritengo genuina, semmai chi l'ha pulita alla fine ha trattato la superficie in modo lucido. Magari con un po di professionalità non avrebbe marcato l'etnico e i fondi.

Tutto sommato , una gran bella monetina, visto il flan e l'ottima conservazione. Peccato che hanno lievemente deturpato l'occhio dell'aquila (che non e cosi).
