Sigillo bizantino

Ciao a tutti,

Mi aiutate ad identificare questo sigillo bizantino? Pesa circa 9.7 grammi con un diametro di 25 mm.

Come interpreto la leggenda al rovescio? Al dritto c'è il busto di San Nicola, giusto?

Se possibile vorrei avere anche un'idea sul valore

Si San Nicola,

è un sigillo in piombo bizantino del secolo XI circa

sul valore non so dirti...per la legenda al retro non essendo il mio campo provo a vedere se lo trovo in qualche pubblicazione

che mi pare si trovi liberamente in rete, se cerchi sigilli di "Nicola" ti darà circa un milione di risultati ...

prova a vedere se lo trovi e spulcialo  con calma... io ho guardato i primi 50/ 60 e ho trovato cose simili ma non identiche...ma non ero nemmeno a metà libro

È un testo impressionante!

Proverò ad identificarlo. L'ho comprato su eBay a poco prezzo perché mi piaceva molto il ritratto. 

Ho trovato anche un passaggio dello stesso sigillo in un'asta tedesca del 2014 ma con un'identificazione genenrica "BYZANTINE LEAD SEAL". Realizzo' 260 euro.

Vabbè continuo con la ricerca

Dopo aver sfogliato 768 pagine del testo sono arrivato a qualche interpretazione che puo' essere anche un po fantasiosa

Allora primo rigo si legge KE BO Che vuol dire Signore Proteggi (KYRIE BONTHEI)

Secondo rigo BARDA che dovrebbe essere un nome BARDAS

Terzo rigo EK PRO SP che dovrebbe stare per EK PROSWPOI e significa delegato di 

Quarto rigo dovrebbe essere TMNTRA che traduco come TIMIOTERA

Quinto rigo non ci leggo niente.

Quindi la legenda dovrebbe significare "Signore Proteggi Bardas Delegato di Timiotera"

Non so se ha alcun senso... ma comunque non trovo nessun sigillo analogo.

Old bang on the reverse, otherwise, nearly very fine.

Laodicea is one of the Seven churches of Asia, mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

Uncertain, circa 550-650. Tessera (Lead, 21 mm, 5.23 g, 12 h). Saint Michael standing front, nimbate, holding scepter in his right hand and globe in his left. Rev. Complex block monogram; to left and above, star. Unpublished in the standard references. An extremely rare early Byzantine tessera. Minor scrapes, otherwise, very fine.

MANTINЄOV within decorated circular border; in the centre, Greek cross within circle. A.-K. Wassiliou-Seibt: ὁ Χριστὸς αὐτὸς σφραγὶς ἀσφαλεστάτη - Byzantinische Bleisiegel aus der Sammlung Gert Boersema (in print), 35. A well preserved and extremely rare seal of an early Byzantine monastery and of great historical importance. Minor flan fault on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

Mantineion is the name of a place and an island in the Black Sea along the coast of Honorias, close to Claudiopolis (modern Bolu). By 740 at the latest, a double monastery was founded here by Saint Anthusa (700-755). Despite being vehemently opposed to the iconoclastic views of Constantine V, who even had her arrested and tortured, Anthusa gained the support of the empress Eudocia after predicting the birth of imperial twins. The empress made significant contributions to the Mantineion monastery. During its long history, the monastery seems to have had periods of exclusivity for either monks or nuns. The Mantineion monastery is also attested as a place of banishment for noble women in the 10th and 11th centuries.

Lot 4038. Anonymous, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 26 mm, 9.39 g, 11 h). MHP – ΘV The Mother of God, nimbate, both hands half-raised before her, palms outward. Rev. NI/KO-Λ/AO Nimbate facing bust of Saint Nicholas, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left. Cheynet, Istanbul 10.29. Flan crack at the channel mouth and with some scrapes, otherwise, very fine.

Da tempo la Leu , e anche Nomos, hanno delle raccolte di sigilli spettacolari. In precedenza tali pezzi nelle aste erano piuttosto rari…

Ho cercato nei cartacei ma anche nel web ed ho trovato vari sigilli che hanno il lato dov'è raffigurato il Santo simile se non uguale,ma la scritta ,dall'altro lato, varia e non è uguale a questa.

Da un 4 o 5 anni i sigilli bizantini vengono messi in vendita dalle case d'aste soprattutto estere e,vi sono case d'aste che li pongono in vendita a 30/40 Dollari ,altre a 150 ed anche più ma non bisogna generalizzare,ci sono ,presumo,dei criteri di valutazione dati da chi studia questi sigilli ed in base a questi criteri vengono attribuite delle stime.

Per quanto concerne il tuo sigillo, dal momento,che non li studio i sigilli,non posso dare una stima ma,per il fatto che non si riesce a trovane un'altro simile con la medesima scritta ,potrebbe considerarsi raro ma questa è solo una mia ipotesi.

Il ‘theme’ e’ una provincia politico-militare, in questo caso della Tracia una delle piu’ estese e importanti dell’impero bizantino : 

Theme of the Thracesians (Greek: θέμα Θρᾳκησίων, thema Thrakēsiōn, often simply Θρᾳκήσιοι, Thrakēsioi), was a military-civilian province in western Asia Minor (modern Turkey). Created either in the mid-7th or the early 8th century as the settlement of the former Army of Thrace, after which it was named, it was one of the larger and more important themes of the Empire. 

Per testi e fonti piu’ aggiornati ( lo Schlumberger e’ un ottimo testo storico ma inevitabilmente datato - oggi la sigillografia bizantina ha fatto passi da gigante grazie alle pubblicazioni di Dumbarton Oaks ricca di ben 17.000 sigilli e alla collezione e studi pubblicati da Zacos):
