Oggi 3 settembre la Chiesa ricorda San Gregorio Magno Papa che fu pontefice dal 590 al 640, periodo in cui Roma era minacciata dai Longobardi.

La bella medaglia coniata nel 1904  (esemplare con qualche problema conservativo) è stata realizzata per il pontificato di Pio X ad opera dell'Abbate Corbierre, ricorda il tredicesimo centenario della morte di San Gregorio Magno ed è piuttosto rara.
