Scilla, con due code di pesce e quattro parti anteriori di cane, di fronte, testa a sinistra, braccio destro alzato, che regge il timone (non il tridente, come dice la didascalia).

(gr. Σκύλλα) Nella mitologia greca, mostro marino, localizzato nello Stretto di Messina sulla costa davanti allo rupe dove stava Cariddi (➔). Secondo il mito, S., bellissima figlia di Trieno o di Forco, il dio marino, e di una dea, Crateide, oppure di Forbante e di Ecate, fu trasformata da Circe, gelosa di Glauco che ne era innamorato, o da Anfitrite gelosa di Posidone, in un mostro orribile dalla testa e il corpo di donna che terminava in un’appendice pisciforme da cui sporgevano teste di cani voraci. Questi al passaggio della nave di Ulisse divorarono sei compagni dell’eroe. L’uccisione di S. era attribuita a Eracle, che lottò con lei perché gli aveva fagocitato alcuni buoi di Gerione. In seguito Forco con la magia avrebbe reso la vita alla figlia.

Talvolta i mitografi confondevano questa S. con un altro personaggio dello stesso nome: la figlia di Niso, re di Megara, che per amore del cretese Minosse, venuto ad assediare la sua città, non esitò a strappare al padre il capello fatale (d’oro o di porpora) che gli assicurava la vita. Minosse, inorridito per tale malvagità, fuggì per mare, S. lo inseguì e fu allora trasformata nell’uccello marino ciris.
