Sicily, The Mamertinoi(?) Æ Trichalkon. Circa 3rd - 2nd century BC. Laureate head of Ares to right; APE[OΣ] (faint traces) before / Tripod; monogram (mark of value) to right. Unpublished in the standard references; for similar obv. type, cf. HGC 2, 864-5, 868, 870 and 876. 3.68g, 17mm, 12h.
Good Fine. Extremely Rare; unpublished and possibly unique.

The obverse legend, albeit faint, appears to identify the obverse portrait as Ares (APEOΣ). The Mamertinoi named themselves in honour of the Oscan war god Mamer, who was roughly equivalent to Ares and often depicted on their coinage. Despite the absence of a visible legend naming the Mamertinoi, this issue is tentatively attributed to them on the basis that the legend APEOΣ is not found on the obverse of the coinage of any other city and the reverse mark of value is also consistent with other issues (cf. HGC 2, 859).

 

L'esemplare viene attribuito, seppur dubitativamente, ad un'emissione realizzata dai Mamertinoi sulla base della legenda al D/, la cui lettura (APEOΣ)  - in verità alquanto incerta per il cattivo stato di conservazione del pezzo - rimanderebbe al dio Ares raffigurato sui bronzi in oggetto, i quali, tuttavia, non esibiscono mai il tripode al rovescio.

Mi chiedo pertanto se non vada presa in considerazione anche un'eventuale attribuzione a Petelia.
