maridvnvm Inviato 4 Giugno, 2023 #1 Inviato 4 Giugno, 2023 I am new here but have been collecting for quite a long time. I have a few collections but my passion is the coinage of the eastern mints of Septimius Severus. ARe there any other collectors of these issues here that would be willing to share examples from their collections? I primarily focus on "Emesa" and the IMP II and early IMP VIII issues from "Laodicea-ad-Mare. Cita

maridvnvm Inviato 4 Giugno, 2023 Autore #3 Inviato 4 Giugno, 2023 Thank you for sharing. I do not generally focus on these later issues but have gathered several over the years. Here are a couple of the IMP VIIII issue. Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIIII, laureate head right Rev:– P M TR P V COS II P P, Sol standing left, raising right hand, holding whip in left Laodicea-ad-mare mint. A.D. 198 Reference:– BMCRE 463. RIC 492. RSC 433 Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIIII, Laureate head right Rev:– PROFECTIO AVG, Septimius Severus in military dress on horseback right, holding spear Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare, A.D. 197 References:– RIC 494 (Scarce), RSC 580 Shortly after this comes a small issue which appears to only occur from a single obverse die. O am able to share all three known reverse types:- Obv:– L SEP SEVERVS PER AVG PIV IMP XI PAR P M, laureate head right Rev:– SALVTI AVGG, Salus seated left feeding snake coiled around altar Eastern mint. A.D. 198 Reference:– BMCRE page 281 Note, citing RD page 102. RIC 497b corr. Holed. Obv:– L SEP SEVERVS PER AVG PIV IMP XI PAR P M, laureate head right Rev:– AR AD TR P VI / COS II P P, Two captives seated back to back at the foot of a trophy Eastern mint. A.D. 198 Reference:– BMCRE page 280 Sword, citing RD page 105. RIC 494b corr. Slightly double struck on the reverse. Obv:– L SEP SEVERVS PER AVG PIV IMP XI PAR P M, laureate head right Rev:– AR AD [T]R P VI COS II P P, Victory walking left, holding wreath in right hand, palm in left Eastern mint. A.D. 198 Reference:– BMCRE page 280 *, citing RD page 105. RIC 494a corr. It is also worth watching out for scarce examples of either the cuirassed or draped and cuirassed busts. These are quite unusual in the series. Obv:– L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind Rev:– AEQVITA-TI AVGG, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia Minted in Laodicea ad Mare. maridvnvm Inviato 4 Giugno, 2023 Autore #4 Inviato 4 Giugno, 2023 My main focus is however on the earlier issues. I will share a very small sample. "Emesa" "AVG" issue, particularly those with the unusual "II COS" reverse legends Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG, Laureate head right Rev:– BONI EVENTVS II COS, Fides standing left holding plate of fruit and two wheat ears Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 Reference:– BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -. Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II CO, Laureate head right Rev:– VICTOR IVST AVG, Victory walking left, holding wreath in right hand, palm in left . Minted in Emesa, Early A.D. 194 References:– RIC -, RSC -, BMCRE -. 2.98g, 17.65mm, 180o Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG II COS, Laureate head right Rev:– BONAE SPEI II COS, Spes standing holding flower and lifting skirt Minted in Emesa, 194 - 195 A.D. Minted in Emesa, Late A.D. 193 or Early A.D. 194 References:– RIC -, RSC -, BMCRE -. 2.47g, 18.29mm, 0o and the relatively common "COS I" issue Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SE - V PERT AVG COS I, Laureate head right Rev:– FORTVNAE REDVCI, Fortuna (Pietas) standing left holding patera and cornucopia, sacrificing over altar Minted in Emesa, A.D. 193 References:– RIC Page 139 (5) (Scarce) 2.99g, 18.69mm, 0o Then the large "COS II" issue. Obv:– IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right Rev:– FORTVA (sic) REDVC, Fortuna standing left, holding rudder and cornucopiae Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194-195 Reference(s) – BMCRE -. Die axis 0 degrees. Weight 2.61g Obv:- IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, Laureate head right Rev:- VENER AVG, Victory advancing left holding wreath and palm Eastern COS II mint (RIC - Emesa). A.D. 193 - 195 References:- BMCRE -. RSC - RIC -. 2.74 g, 17.38 mm. 180 degree This reverse type should come with VICTOR AVG or VICT AVG. VENER VICT and variations (VICTR, VICTOR etc.) turn up on Venus types of Domna, which we so rarely seen muled with obverses of Septimius Severus but I have never seen this odd mixing. 2 Cita
maridvnvm Inviato 5 Giugno, 2023 Autore #5 Inviato 5 Giugno, 2023 Along side this "COS II" issue there are several dies that have a style that is not consistent with the bulk of the "COS II" issue and seems more stylistically aligned with the style of the "IMP II" issue. I have a sub-collection that focusses in on this particular sub-series. I am attempting to find reverse die matches into other series that will help provide more information on these coins. I have identified nine obverse dies that fit into this sub-series. I have several reverse dies combined with many of these obverse dies.
