L. PAPI denarius serratus

Lucius Papius was one of the triumvir monetalis in 79 B.C. One interesting element in this coinage is the paired symbols used on either side of the coins. Each coin was produced with a pair of symbols in the field that were linked by a theme. These dies were not used interchangeably and coins only exist with the paired die. As far as I am aware the symbols were only repeated  twice Crawford RRC Symbol variant 1 (amphora/amphora) and RRC Symbol variant 11 (tall cup/jug). We cannot be sure how many die pairs were created but there is a hypothesis that there were 246 die pairs due to the fact that one die is known with  CCXLVI/CCXLVI (RRC Symbol variant 178). Crawford identified and illustrated 211 die variant pairs at the time of publishing.

Several new dies have been found since RRC was published. To my knowledge the most comprehensive analysis of this type was performed by  Richard Schaefer as part of the Roman Republican Die Project (RRDP) https://numismatics.org/pocketchange/schaefer/

I have been is discussion with James and Richard in the past and wanted to take the opportunity to share a couple of examples frmo my collection that are relatively interesting.

Lucio Papio fu uno dei triumviri monetali del 79 a.C. Un elemento interessante di questa monetazione è la coppia di simboli utilizzati su entrambi i lati delle monete. Ogni moneta fu prodotta con una coppia di simboli nel campo che erano collegati da un tema. Queste matrici non venivano utilizzate in modo intercambiabile e le monete esistono solo con la matrice accoppiata. Per quanto ne so, i simboli sono stati ripetuti solo due volte Crawford RRC Symbol variant 1 (anfora/anfora) e RRC Symbol variant 11 (coppa alta/giara). Non possiamo essere certi di quante coppie di dadi siano state create, ma si ipotizza che ci siano state 246 coppie di dadi per il fatto che un dado è noto con CCXLVI/CCXLVI (RRC Symbol variant 178). Al momento della pubblicazione, Crawford ha identificato e illustrato 211 coppie di varianti di dadi.
