Numerian - Lugdunum - VIRTVS AVGG

In the 9th emission of Numerian from Lugdunum there are a few interesting types that occur. Amongst them is a reverse type that is relatively common for other emperors but is quite scarce for Numerian. I was lucky enough to obtain a decent example of this type recently.

Numerian Antoninianus

Obv:– IMP C NVMERIANVS AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right
Rev:– VIRTVS AVGG, Virtus standing left holding Vicotry, who is holding a wreath and palm and inverted spear

Here is another coin from the same issue from my collection (I do need t update the image). This reverse type is unique to this issue and does not occur anywhere else in Roman Imperial coinage. It is highly unusual to see a depiction of the Emperor wielding a sword at a captive.

Rev:– PACATO-R ORBIS, Emperor advancing right, holding shield and sword, captive, cowering beneath
