The amount of wear that your example has received, unfortunately, makes it difficult to determine the specifics of the host coin. It is not unusually worn, though—these coins appear to have circulated for a long time. When the undersea wreck of the C.S.S. Alabama (an infamous commerce-raider of the Confederate navy during the American Civil War of 1861-1865) was explored some years ago, one of the artifacts brought up from the sea bottom was one of these big counter-stamped 40-reis pieces.
