Ho visto più volte segnalate delle legende anomale per Gordiano 3°; evidentemente, in quel periodo gli errori erano numerosi e vari. Questo non l'ho trovato, neppure nel sito su Gordiano. Qualcuno di voi lo conosceva? Al D. IMP GORDIANUS PIUS FEL AUG. Al R. VICTORIA AET POR. E' simile solo in parte alla RIC 337a ed alla RIC 388a. Mi sono chiesto se AET POR è una svista banale, diciamo un errore materiale, o se può voler dire qualcosa: POR= POpuli Romani? Oppure ho letto male? Che cosa ne dite?

Rovescio. Dimenticavo: pesa 19,8 g. e misura 30 mm.

La parte inferiore della legenda della moneta sembra che non abbia a che fare con la superiore, se guardi non si legge VICTORIA, sembra che cominci con la "P": sembrerebbe quindi che o e' stata ribattuta su se stessa (e il POR e' un TOR... ma non mi convince) o ribattuta su altra moneta...

Prova a postare una foto del rovescio con l'illuminazione dal basso.

Augustus, grazie per il prezioso parere! Effettivamente, leggendo meglio la scritta, dalle ore 6 vedo:

(A)EA(oppure T) CTORIA AET P ORI Quindi forse una ribattitura a 180°, che però riguarda solo la legenda e non (o molto meno) la figura della Vittoria. Davvero difficile da interpretare.

Dear Briac, your sestertius is very interesting, and I agree with your hypothesis (no other explication is possible). But, what was the aim? Better, the purpose of this production? The imperator wasn't changed, nor the value of the coin; the types of the reverse were both well acceptable.. I can imagine only a mistake inside the production. Perhaps, the reverse coin was broken, and they utilised in error a different reverse, instead of a similar. What do you think about? For the last question, I will write to your private email.

Colin Kraay did study such overstrucked coin, and provide a perfect theory.

The mint was working like this.

3 workers, 1 put the coin on the overse die, and the 2 others had reverse dies and hammer for stricking. so if the second guy was stricking too quick, the coin wasn't out of the die and was strucked a second time. there is no real willing, it's only a mistake of stricking.

Such mistakes have a great interest, for example, my sestertius provide us the evidence than the "final issue" of the RIC don't exist, the coin with P M TR P VII COS II P P was strucked simultaneous with the coin with short titulature.

Your coin provide us the evidence than there is 2 phases in the last issue

The 2 coins together tell us than 1st phase was long titulature (like MARTEM PROPVGNATOREM) and second phase with short titulature (like MARS PROPVGNAT)
