Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. AR tetradrachm (27 mm, 16.70 g, 1 h). Uncertain Macedonian mint, perhaps Pella, posthumously, perhaps under Antigonos II Gonatas, ca. 280-ca. 275 B.C. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / [ΑΛΕ]ΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, Triton facing left, blowing horn; below throne, monogram. Mathisen grp. II, 3; Price 526. Rare Triton issue. Very rare issue. Fine.

Mathisen dated the rare Triton group of Alexander tetradrachms to 279/8 B.C. at Amphipolis. For stylistic reasons, Price thought they could not be from Amphipolis and instead suggested Pella. The issue, however, was certainly struck at a mint under the control of Antigonos II Gonatas shortly before he assumed the regal title in 277/6 B.C.

Das Beizeichen makedonischer Helm macht es wahrscheinlich, dass diese Prägung unter Antigonos Gonatas erfolgte. Es ist das häufigste Münzzeichen seiner Prägungen. Aus eLive Auction 71 der Firma Künker, Osnabrück 2022, Nr. 123.

Il tetradramma Price 621 è il primo di una serie che procede in sequenza fino al Price 632, caratterizzata dall’elmo crestato nel campo a sinistra del rovescio e con differenze nei monogrammi sotto il trono di Zeus e/o in esergo.

Nel tetradramma successivo Price 622 troviamo ancora il monogramma K e O (Price 629), accompagnato però dal monogramma formato da Ε, Υ e Κ (Price 320) in esergo.
