Lot 6. KINGS of MACEDON. Philip III. 323-317 BC. AR Obol (9mm - 0.86 g). Sidon mint. Dated CY 14 (320/19 BC). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / Zeus seated left, holding eagle in right hand, scepter in left; Ξ in left field, ΣI below throne. Price -; Müller -. Good VF/VF, toned., reverse strike a bit weak but controls clear Attractive style obverse. Price doesn't record any obols for Philip III from Sidon, but there is a hemiobol from this same year (Price P174). The controls on this coin though are a bit unusual. It's possible that instead of ΣI below the throne there's a EI below the throne, in that case it's apparently unpublished. Cita

AR Hemiobol (0.29 gm, 7h). Imitating Alexander the Great. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin / Bow-in-bowcase and club; wreath below. Meshorer & Qedar -. VF, toned. ($200) M&Q place the termination of Samarian coinage at the time of the conquest of Palestine by Alexander. However, recent finds of Samarian coins have included crude imitations of silver fractions of the type of Alexander. It is possible that coinage did continue at Samaria for a few years after the conquest, perhaps up to the time of Ptolemy I. Cita
