SICIONE

Sicione (gr. Σικυών) Antica città della Grecia, sulla costa settentrionale del Peloponneso. Situata in origine nella piana sul Golfo di Corinto, fu spostata nel 303 a. C. da Demetrio Poliorcete su un altopiano più interno. Sulla terrazza superiore era l’acropoli, su quella inferiore l’agorà con edifici pubblici e abitazioni. Si conservano i resti delle mura, dei 3 santuari, lo stadio e il grande teatro (3° sec. a. C.), oltre a strutture pubbliche, a un tempio di età arcaica e a un bagno romano (2°-3° sec. d. C.).

According to A. Milavic ("Pankration and Greek Coins," The Celator 13.12 [December 1999], and "Pankration and Greek Coins," The International Journal of the History of Sport 18.2 [2001], pp. 179–92), the youth on the reverse is most likely Sostratos, the famous pankratiast of Sikyon who won three Olympic victories, in 364, 360, and 356 BC, as well as 12 other victories in the Isthmian and Nemean Games. Sostratos was known as the 'fingerman' for bending and breaking the fingers of his opponents in this brutal athletic contest.

Secondo A. Milavic ("Pankration and Greek Coins", The Celator 13.12 [dicembre 1999], e "Pankration and Greek Coins", The International Journal of the History of Sport 18.2 [2001], pp. 179-92), il giovane sul rovescio è molto probabilmente Sostratos, il famoso pancrazio di Sikyon che ottenne tre vittorie olimpiche, nel 364, 360 e 356 a. C., oltre ad altre 12 vittorie nei Giochi Istmici e Nemei. Sostratos era noto come "l'uomo delle dita" per aver piegato e spezzato le dita dei suoi avversari in questa brutale gara atletica.

TARSO

(turco Tarsus) Città della Turchia (160.000 ab. ca.), presso la costa mediterranea, 80 km da Adana, nella prov. di Içel. Industrie tessili e conciarie. La sua importanza nell’antichità derivava dal fatto che il fiume Tarso (ant. Cidno), su cui la città si trova, era navigabile.

È incerto se a T. si debbano collegare i Tursa (Teres) che con altri ‘Popoli del mare’ tentarono l’invasione dell’Egitto nel 2° millennio a.C. Dopo essere stata sotto i Persiani, venne conquistata da Alessandro Magno (333), poi dai Seleucidi che le mutarono il nome in quello di Antiochia al Cidno (prima metà del 3° sec. a.C.). Conquistata dai Romani, fu capoluogo della provincia Cilicia. Beneficata da Cesare, fu fedele ad Antonio e Ottaviano, che la attribuirono ulteriori benefici. In età imperiale fu città cosmopolita: vi erano Greci, Anatolici ellenizzati, Romani e infine una colonia giudaica cui certo apparteneva s. Paolo.

TEMNOS

Temnos o Temnus (in greco antico: Τῆμνος; in greco eolico: Τᾶμνος) era una piccola polis (città-stato) greca dell'antica Eolide, poi incorporata nella provincia romana d'Asia, sulla costa occidentale dell'Anatolia. La sua sede vescovile era suffraganea di Efeso, capitale e sede metropolitana della provincia, ed è inclusa nell'elenco delle sedi titolari della Chiesa cattolica.

La cittadina sorgeva vicino al fiume Hermus, che è raffigurato sulle sue monete. Situata in posizione elevata, godeva di una vista sui territori di Cyme, Phocaea e Smyrna. Sotto Augusto era già in declino; sotto Tiberio fu distrutta da un terremoto e al tempo di Plinio non era più abitata. Tuttavia, fu ricostruita più tardi. Una delle figure più degne di nota della città fu il retore Ermagora.

Durante il periodo bizantino, molto probabilmente, prese il nome di Arcangelo. Nel 1413 i Turchi si impadronirono della fortezza di Arcangelo, che chiamarono Kaiadjik, cioè piccola roccia; questa fortezza era situata nella pianura di Maenomeno, oggi nota come Menemen. Il suo sito si trova vicino a Görece, nella Turchia asiatica.
