Filippo V, che regnò in Macedonia dal 220 al 179 a. C., a partire dal 197 concesse il previlegio di coniare monete autonome alle principali città della Macedonia (Anfipoli, Pella, Tessalonica), a vari distretti amministrativi come Amphaxitis e Bottiaia, e alla Confederazione dei Macedoni (Koinon).

Il nome Amphaxitis deriva dal greco antico e significa "intorno alle due rive dell'Axios", un fiume della Macedonia. Infatti in origine questo nome indicava il territorio lungo il percorso inferiore del fiume Axios, dalla gola di Demir Kapija fino alla foce del fiume nel golfo di Salonicco. Successivamente è prevalsa invece l’interpretazione che vede l'Axios separare la Bottia, altro distretto amministrativo sulla riva destra, dall'Amphaxitis situato sulla riva sinistra.

Il bronzo appartiene alla monetazione autonoma dell’Amphaxitis coniata per concessione di Filippo V nel periodo 187-168 a. C. e fa parte di una serie di emissioni con la testa di Eracle al diritto e al rovescio la scritta AMFA/XIWN sopra e sotto una clava con un caratteristico monogramma sotto questa, il tutto entro una ghirlanda. Allo stesso distretto appartengono anche i bronzi dello stesso periodo di tipo Apollo/Tripode e i bronzi del periodo del questore Gaio Publilio (148-146 a. C.) di tipo Dioniso/Capra.
