Un aes grave librale Giano/Prora molto pesante

potrebbe essere un esemplare da prima fusione per costruire l'albero di fusione della serie multipla,una specie di esemplare di ostentazione...in fondo parliamo di bronzo e gia' con l'asse giano prora rientriamo nel periodo del valore nominale non legato al peso soprattutto se di metallo vile...in questo caso c'e' circa un 30%in piu'.....fosse stato il doppio o al limite il 50%avrebbe senza dubbio avuto un valore storico significativo....ma cosi...

mi piacerebbe,comunque avere una conferma ufficiale del peso....

Well, first, it doesn´t weigh 366 grams, it weighs 266 grams.

It was a mistake of CNG which they unfortunately made twice, in their earlier CNG auction and in their Triton auction.

My mistake was that I hadn´t asked them about the weight before bidding. Only after I won the coin I thought that it might be a good idea to look into Haeberlin. There I saw that the heaviest example weighed about 315 grams and I started to worry.

I asked them if they could weigh the coin before shipping it, but it was too late.

When the coin arrived I saw that the weight was 266 grams. I asked them whether I could return the coin and they agreed. So the coin is with CNG again and I have my money back.

I am not an expert in these aes grave coins. I have been collecting roman imperial and provincial coins for 20 years now. But I always wanted to own a heavy aes grave as. When I saw that one I thought that was the chance I had been waiting for. I heard that there might be many fakes of these types and that it is recommended to buy only at reputable dealers who have good knowledge concerning these coins (e.g. CNG, NAC, Künker).

I live in Munich and I think that we have no real experts for these coins here.

I think that the coin is genuine and I trust the experts of CNG. It´s a nice and impressive coin but given that it is of normal weight it seemed too expensive to me (it´s also by far the most expensive coin I ever bought).

Now I am gathering information to be able to judge myself the authenticity of these coins. But it´s not easy to get, for example, pictures of fakes.

I attended the Numismata last week here in Munich and I bought a quadrans (boar/boar) from an Italian dealer. He also had a nice as but as I was not able to judge it´s authenticity I preferred not to buy it.

So, I will be waiting for future auction... :)

Ciao Arrius, I was the one that offered 3000$....mainly for the curiosity on the weight. I feel lucky now to not having won the coin, and happy also that you had your money back.

Incredible that CNG made two time an error of over sighting on the weight, they also promoted it as "bold aes grave"....not very fair...

Incredible error ! Weight is the most important feature of cast coinage, it's a shame that a mistake of 100 gr had occurred.

For Arrius: you can ask in this forum opinions about cast coinage. Many experts and collectors of this coinage read this forum.

Hai ragione Franco....Ma mi sono accorto di questo pezzo quando l'asta era ormai in chiusura e il fatto che fosse alla seconda apparizione con lo stesso peso mi hanno fatto pensare che un errore di peso reiterato fosse poco probabile..

Invece il copia incolla esiste anche per le piu' importanti case d'asta mondiali...

Yes, it would have been better to ask before bidding. I simply thought like Cliff that CNG wouldn´t make the same error twice and that they would weigh the coin once more after so many years.

But, all´s well that ends well :-)
