Unknown coin help

This coin is:

30 mm

12.9 grams

No reverse. worn smooth. Nothing to see. Looks like a slug on that side.

obverse has unique design

Of which the designs are of lower relief than the rest of the coin.

Any ideas?

Hello Doug,

I really haven't seen anything similar before. Are the square/crosslet patterns incuse? This may not be a coin, possibly a button or a brooch/garment clasp.

Hi Paleologo,

I'm starting to think the same thing.

One aspect I hadn't noticed before are 3 holes, very small, equally spaces around the item.

The patterns are incuse.

Had thought maybe an early token type item or coin.

But as mentioned might be a button. Or something meant to be worn around the neck

This was in an unclean coin lot. Cleaned easily.

Have cleaned other large button looking items before.

So I guess this shouldn't be surprising.
