One cent. One single penny. I had a plastic model of the ship when I was a little boy, when the Forrestal was still new enough to be the pride of the American navy. I got the kit for my birthday, but the price was printed on the box—my parents couldn’t remove it without injuring the illustration. That collection of plastic parts cost four dollars. Four hundred pennies. (I remembered the cost because it seemed so enormous.)

Anyway, thinking about the contrast between what is, and what was, puts me in mind of the famous phrase so associated with Lincoln, subject of this 1-cent piece: “And this, too, shall pass away.”
