Questo emistatere di Gortina è connesso al bronzo coniato in occasione della sua alleanza con Cnosso (v. post # 20) per Europa raffigurata sul diritto, qui in versione senza veli e più sexy dell’altra. A destra, sull’albero, l’aquila simbolo di Zeus e sul rovescio il toro, nelle cui sembianze Zeus ha trasportato Europa dal lido fenicio a Creta.

Testa di Zeus o di Minosse?

Non ho trovato monete con il Labirinto di Cnosso che raffigurassero Minosse sul diritto, se non questa dramma (da Künker 94, 27 settembre 2004)) che lo raffigura al… 50%, in quanto la testa di profilo potrebbe essere anche quella di Zeus.

Non dimentichiamo che Minosse è nato a Creta dall’unione di Zeus con Europa e quindi la somiglianza tra padre e figlio è verosimile.

Le nozze tra Zeus ed Europa si sono consumate a Gortina e quindi ci sta anche questa dramma dove la sposa è raffigurata di profilo.

While the myth of Europa as one of Zeus’ numerous trysts is well-known and has been the subject of literature and art since at least the fifth century BC, certain portions of the entire episode received more attention than others. What occurred when Zeus brought Europa to Crete is one such part. According to the later authors Theophrastos (371-ca. 287 BC) and Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79), Zeus consummated his abduction of Europa in a plane-tree (ἡ πλάτανος), an event commemorated on a series of silver and bronze issues from the Cretan city of Gortyna, traditional site of that event.

According to the traditional account, Europa was the daughter of Agenor, king of Tyre, the sister of Kadmos, the legendary founder of Corinth, and Kilix, for whom Cilicia was named, and was a descendant of Io, one of Zeus’ numerous other mortal female trysts. Europa, too, attracted the eye of Zeus, who, transforming himself into a white bull, seduced the young girl, carrying her across the Aegean Sea to the region of Gortyna on Crete, where she was made the first queen of Crete. Gortyna’s special involvement in this myth - it was claimed the plane-tree was still extant centuries after the event - made its depiction on the civic coinage an important reminder of the city’s role in Crete’s early history.

Stamani il tetra di cui sopra ha lasciato la reggia di Minosse a un hammer di 4.500 €, esattamente il valore della stima.

 

Notevole successo di tutte le alte monete cretesi in asta, precisamente di Aptera, Gortyn, Itanos, Kydonia, Lyttos, Phaistos, Praisos e Rhaukos. La performance più significativa è stata quella dello statere di Lyttos, lotto 240, passato da una stima di 1000 € a un hammer di 6500 €.

Nell'asta di stamane questo statere di Cnosso (come il precedente che avevo definito per errore tetradramma) che presenta una testa frontale sottoconiata parzialmente visibile ha avuto il bell'incremento a 850 € da 200 € di stima.

Le monete cretesi sono sempre molto ambite sul mercato, soprattutto quando presentano un ottimo stato di conservazione. Segnalo che un'esemplare di Festo pochi anni fa raggiunse i 650,000$ e una moneta di Gortina 479,000$... ma sono pezzi favolosi e ricordo di aver letto qui sul forum anche di un bellissimo pezzo di Olous / Olunte!

Forse è stata pulita maldestramente? I rilievi del minotauro sembra siano stati "aiutati"...Il rovescio con il labirinto, invece, mi piace di più. Ma sono solo sensazioni.

Sono d’accordo sul labirinto: questo è il ‘Lanz 163, lot 72 (same rev. die)’ citato nella didascalia dello statere CNG.

Laureate head of Apollo left / ΚΝΩΣΙ[ΩΝ], male figure (King Minos?) seated left on square labyrinth, holding Nike in extended right hand and scepter in left, monogram on left. Le Rider, Crete, plate 35, 6 (this coin). Svoronos 82 (pl. VI, 15). BMC 28 (pl V,14) (this reverse die). Jameson 2519 (this reverse die). Very rare! Somewhat weak reverse strike, signs of smoothing on face below eye, repairing a delamination visible on Le Rider plate, otherwise a handsome specimen on a broad flan.  From the Northern California Collection; acquired from Freeman & Sear, 2003. The figure on the reverse can confidently be identified as the legendary King Minos, sitting atop a representation of his creation, the Labyrinth. According to legend, the Cretan artisan and scientist Deadalus built the Labyrinth on orders from King Minos, who needed a place to keep his wife Pasiphae's monstrous son, the Minotaur. Pasiphae had fallen in love with a beautiful sacrificial bull and the half-man, half-bull Minotaur was the result of her cross-species passion. The Latin poet Ovid, drawing from tradition and oral history, said Deadalus built the Labyrinth so cunningly he nearly trapped himself within its winding passages. The Minotaur was placed at the center and Minos ordered that seven youths and seven maidens be sent by Athens, then subject to Crete, each year as a sacrifice offering to feed the beast. The Athenian hero Theseus volunteered as one of the victims and, with the help of Minos' daughter Ariadne, smuggled in a sword, which he used to slay the Minotaur, and a ball of twine to help him navigate the Labyrinth. The Labyrinth soon became the very symbol of Crete and is shown on the reverse of coins struck by Knossos, its largest city and Minos' capital. Some coins show the Labyrinth in a circular form, while others, such as this example, depict it as square. Archaeologists have found considerable evidence that the Labyrinth was not entirely mythical. Sir Arthur Evans proposed that the huge, sprawling Minoan palace complex of Knossos would have been viewed as an inescapable maze by anyone from backwards mainland Greece; more recently, an underground warren of tunnels and caves, some natural and others man-made, has been explored under Gortyna, providing another strong candidate for the Minotaur's home.  HID02901242017 Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
