Monetazione imperiale della Germania sopra il valore 1-mark è stato colpito da costitutivi città e stati dell'Impero. Elevato valore in argento dell'impero era il pezzo 5-mark e, in 27,78 grammi d'argento .900, ecco il pezzo 5-mark 1876j colpito dalla libera e anseatica cittá di Amburgo:

 

 

Quando questa moneta fu coniata nel 1876 l'impero aveva cinque anni e, come chiarisce questa moneta—sella alta.

 

Il contrasto tra quel momento nel 1876, e il momento quando questa moneta era demonetizzata su 20 aprile 1920, è una cosa straziante a contemplare—ma non così straziante come sapendo che il peggio doveva ancora venire. E poi ancora peggio.

Imperial Germany’s coinage above the 1-mark value was struck by the Empire’s constituent cities and states. The Empire’s high-value in silver was the 5-mark piece, and here, in 27.78 grams of .900 silver, is the 1876j 5-mark piece struck by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg:

 

 

When this coin was minted in 1876 the Empire was five years old and—as this coin makes clear—riding high.

 

The contrast between that moment in 1876, and the moment when this coin was demonetized on 20 April 1920, is a heartbreaking thing to contemplate—but not so heartbreaking as the knowledge that worse was yet to come. And then still worse.

Che moneta affascinante, complimenti per averla in collezione...;)

Ho sempre trovato esteticamente gradevole lo stemma della città di Amburgo...qualcuno mi sa fornire una delucidazione sul suo significato allegorico?

Ho guardato in rete alcuni e quello che ho trovato è stato davvero tipo di pedonale. (Era come se stavo cercando informazioni sul città-di-stemma... diciamo, Chicago, o Houston :D .

 

Una cosa circa le braccia di Amburgo ha fatto scioccare i miei sensi—come fa occasionalmente nel mondo solitamente monocromatico delle monete—la fortezza grigia chiara o bianca è visualizzata contro un rosso brillante . Yikes!

 

Penso che dopo tutti questi anni che mi sono appena più a casa con la dignità, la tranquilla beauty(!), del vecchio argento.

I looked on the Net some and what I found was really kind of pedestrian. (It was like I was looking for information on the city coat-of-arms of…say, Chicago, or Houston :D .

 

One thing about the Hamburg arms did shock my senses—as it occasionally does in the usually monochrome world of coins—the white or light grey fortress is displayed against a bright red background. Yikes!

 

I guess after all these years I’m just more at home with the dignity, the quiet beauty(!), of old silver.

All coat of arms show a castle with three towers. The middle tower shows a cross on top. It is believed that the so-called Marian stars on top of the two side-towers and the cross recalls the fact that Hamburg used to be an archbishopric.The towers and the walls with their pinnacles and the closed gate symbolized the determination of the town to defend itself.
