villa66 Inviato 7 Gennaio, 2017 #27 Inviato 7 Gennaio, 2017 What can I say, except that the 1.7M 1870 half dollars are not the ten(!) 1884 Trade Dollars, which were all struck as Proofs. Well, I guess I could disagree with what the photo of the cancelled die illustrates—which I do. But for the sake of argument I could pretend that it does show what you say, and then I could take a page from your own playbook, and insist that the cancelled tool was in fact cancelled because it was defective (the denticles were incorrectly cut!), and so was never used to strike coins. But maybe you can prove otherwise? Maybe you can prove the cancelled die was actually used to strike half dollars a dozen or so years before the dollar coin you seek to de-authenticate? Remembering, of course, that certifications or representations of third-party authorities won’t suffice, because you seemingly dismiss everything else they say. Nah. As my daughter likes to say, “Silliness in a box.” For my part, when it comes to questions of authenticity, I’ll trust the homegrown numismatists who have been studying (and tracking) these 10 coins for more than a century. v.
