Dodecadrammi con la triscele

Nell’ambito delle monete antiche con la raffigurazione della triscele tra cui quelle riportate nella discussione dell’amico roth37 http://www.lamoneta.it/topic/137973-dopo-la-lidia-la-licia/ , i dodecagrammi delle tribù tracio-macedoni dei Derroni sono sicuramente quelle di maggior peso e dimensioni.

 

 

THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Derrones. Circa 480-465 BC. AR Dodekadrachm (36mm, 39.22 g). Driver, holding goad in right hand, reins in left, driving ox cart right; above, crested Corinthian helmet right; solar disc or wheel below / Clockwise triskeles with central O. Peykov 1420 var. (legend on obv., floral ornaments on rev.); otherwise unpublished. Good VF, attractively toned, minor double strike. Unpublished variety.

 

Lot comes with a Greek export certificate.

 

The dodekadrachms of the Derrones typically feature either the helmet or solar wheel in the field above the scene, sometimes with a secondary symbol below. On this piece, both primary symbols are present, which is unknown on other coins of the Derrones. The context and meaning of the types of the Derrones' dodekadrachms are still being debated. Little is known of this tribe other than what can be gleaned from their surviving coinage. Hoard find-spots suggest that they inhabited inland Paeonia, and the absence of their coins from the Asyut hoard suggests that the coinage postdates the burial of that hoard. The obverse type depicts a male figure who is most likely the tribal king and hereditary high priest while the helmet suggests a military reference.

Driver, holding goad in right hand, reins in left, driving ox cart right; above, crested Corinthian helmet right, Π between legs, I to right, Ǝ above / Triskeles right within irregular incuse. Rauch 85, 147; Helios 3, 31; Freeman & Sear 14, 124; Gemini III, 84 (all from the same dies); otherwise unpublished. EF, toned, some doubling on obverse. Very rare, one of only five known of this variety.

 

Although most of the inscribed issues of the Derrones feature their tribal ethnic, some issues feature other letters in the field that Svoronos (in HPM) has reasonably assumed represent the name of chieftains. The present variety, marked with Pie-, brings to four the number of known chieftains, with the others being Euergetes (HPM p. 10, 18), Xe- (HPM p. 11, 19), and Ekgo- (HPM p. 13, 20).

 

Questo esemplare simile a quello di apertura della discussione ma di peso inferiore a quello usuale per i dodecadrammi (ca. 40 g) si potrebbe considerare un’imitazione contemporanea. Vi sono però numerosi fattori che rendono più probabile si tratti di una delle ultime emissioni ufficiali. L’emissione di un’imitazione in quel periodo sarebbe insolita e si nota a occhio che la qualità dell’argento non è inferiore a quella delle monete ufficiali. La presenza di pezzi di peso inferiore nello stesso gruppo di quelli ufficiali suggerisce che i pezzi più leggeri fossero considerati un pagamento accettabile (pur commensurato al loro valore) alla stregua degli altri. Tutto ciò indica che questi tipi ‘light’ rappresentano una transizione ufficiale a un peso standard più basso negli ultimi dodecadrammi dei Derroni, che possono scendere anche a poco più di 30 g.

@@apollonia e a chiunque ne sia interessato. Ho trovato questa interessante tesi di dottorato della Sorbona di un certo Tzamalis, che tra l'altro aveva come membro della commissione il De Callatay.... :D

Qui di dodecadrammi con la triscele ce ne sono in abbondanza.... ma non solo.... si discute tutta la monetazione delle tribù traco-macedoni di fine VI inizio V secolo... tra l'altro con un ricchissimo apparato fotografico.

Una ottima tesi di dottorato, che fa onore alla celebre Università parigina della Sorbona.

Magari fossero disponibili sulla rete anche certe tesi di dottorato italiane che hanno preso in considerazione importanti settori di monete greche.

Purtroppo per la mentalità italiana la tesi di dottorato è in genere un lavoro solo preliminare che deve essere attentamente sviluppato e perfezionato prima di essere pubblicato. Ma molto spesso, conseguito il dottorato, il ricercatore lo mette nel cassetto oppure addirittura cambia mestiere.... E molto spesso la tesi risente anche di un tiepido interessamento da parte del docente relatore....

 

Si capisce l'importanza della qualità di docenti nelle Università, e in campo numismatico quelle italiane non brillano molto (salvo poche eccezioni)....

Quella tesi l'ho presa dal sito dell'ANS, dove hanno appunto iniziato questo progetto relativo alla pubblicazione e libera consultazione di tesi di dottorato relative alla numismatica. Per ora sono solo 6... ma questo dimostra ancora una volta come la mentalità americana sia decisamente più avanti in campo scientifico...

THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Derrones. Circa 480-465 BC. Dodekadrachm (Silver, 33 mm, 39.60 g, 7 h). Bearded male figure, wearing a tight-fitting kausia and light robes, driving an ox cart to left, holding the reins in his left hand and a goad in his right; above, crested Corinthian helmet to left. Rev. Triskeles running to left; between all (?) three legs, palmette. HPM 17 and pl. II, 2-3 (same obverse die). With a boldly struck obverse; beautifully toned. Struck from the usual worn reverse die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a European collection, acquired privately from Sonja Lambert in 2007.
