CNG 100, parte 1, lotto 85

IONIA, Miletos. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Hekte – Sixth Stater (12.5mm, 2.28 g). Lion reclining left, head reverted, within rectangular frame / Two square punches containing, respectively, floral and stellate designs. Weidauer 130 var. (designs in punches); Elektron I 64 var. (geometric, not floral design in one punch); SNG von Aulock –; SNG Kayhan 443; BMC –; Boston MFA –; Rosen Sale 275; Traité I 22 var. (designs in punches). VF, toned. Apparently struck on two hemihekte – twelfth stater flans joined together.

I (lotto 62): The use of two smaller flans to make a larger denomination is attested elsewhere for this series (see Triton V, lot 1427 and Elektron I 62 for two staters struck on flans made in this manner).

CoinID=16149#

Triton V, lotto 1427

IONIA, Miletos. Before 575 BC. EL Stater (14.01 gm). Lion reclining right, head reverted, within rectangular frame divided into smaller rectangular compartments / Central oblong punch containing a running fox and three pellets; square punch below containing stellate pattern; square punch above containing N pattern. Traité pl. i, 17 (slightly different reverse punches). VF, irregular flan. Extremely rare. The right facing lion type is much rarer than the left facing lion type. ($2000)
Ex Classical Numismatic Group Auction 45 (18 March 1998), lot 424.

A highly unusual flan that was made by incomplete melting of a 1/3 stater flan and a 2/3 stater flan. Fascinating.

Sammlung Elektron. Catalog of public auction [7], 20 October 2000. Stuttgart.

Cosa ne pensate di questa particolare tecnica?
