Though not a warrior emperor in the same manner as his predecessor Trajan, the iconography of this coin immediately recalls the similar types issued under Trajan, and also the ancient denarii of the Republic which featured the Dioscuri in similar posture with couched lance. Despite the militaristic theme of this coin and others issued during his reign (which are almost as common as coins with peaceful themes), Hadrian's policy was peace through strength, or threat of strength, with an emphasis on discipline. His skills as a military administrator were well applied during his reign, and aside from the consolidation of the empire's frontiers, Hadrian also made a great many beneficial reforms to the Roman military system, including the introduction of the first regular unit of auxiliary, mailed cataphract cavalry, the ala I Gallorum et Pannoniorum cataphractata, whose primary armament was a heavy lance far more effective than a regular cavalry spear, capable of puncturing two layers of chain mail.

La prima volta che vidi gli affreschi di Pompei compresi perchè i grandi del duecento e trecento fossero sopravalutati..

Era quello che mi son sempre chiesto, infatti quello che la critica ancora oggi esalta non sempre rispecchia la realtà.

Esistono artisti minori che non hanno nulla da invidiare ai grandi maestri cosi chiamati.

Anche il discorso prospettico, per me ampliamente già affrontato nella pittura parietale del periodo classico.

La pittura Pompeiana ne è la riprova..direi sublime...

E stiamo parlando di XX secoli fa...

Lot description: Troas, Dardanos. 3rd-2nd centuries B.C. Æ (14 mm, 1.82 g, 12 h). Head of Hera(?) facing / ΔΑΡ, Warrior (Hektor?) standing left, foot on prow, supporting shield and holding spear. Seemingly unpublished. Perhaps unique. Brown patina, some roughness. Nearly very fine.  There is only one mint in the ancient Greek world whose name begins ΔΑΡ, and that is Dardanos in the Troad. The coinage of Dardanos is scarce, and nearly all known types depict either cocks or horsemen, or a combination of both, until the very final issues struck during the late third and second centuries B.C. This type appears to be completely new for the mint. The identification of the hero on the reverse is not certain, but other (albeit later) issues from the region do depict the hero Hektor in similar poses (see, e.g, Bellinger, Troy T162-4 and T212 [Ilium]).    Estimate: 75 USD

Male figure (Odysseus or Phrixus?) wearing pileus helmet and chlamys kneeling left with legs astride ram recumbent left, pulling ram's head back with left arm and preparing to cut its throat with dagger held in right hand / Quadripartite "mill sail" incuse punch. Cf. Von Fritze Nomsima VII, 156 and pl. V, 4 (stater). Cf. Greenwell 71 and pl. III, 22 (same). Extremely rare, and possibly one of two known (the other being NAC 84, lot 637). A gorgeous and poignant composition, engraved by a master artist.
This beautifully rendered scene shows a man wearing a pointed cap or pileus (or perhaps a helmet of similar design) sacrificing a ram to the gods. Probably a scene from mythology, the most likely candidate would be Odysseus (often shown in art wearing a pileus) sacrificing an animal provided by his erstwhile lover Circe before descending into Hades. Another possibility would be Phrixus sacrificing the golden ram sent by Zeus to rescue him from the waters of the Hellespont; the ram became the Golden Fleece sought by Jason and the Argonauts.

Byblos was the Greek name given to the northern Phoenician city of Gebal, which has been considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city was ruled by a local dynasty of kings who were often vassals of the great Near Eastern powers of Egypt, Assyria, and Persia. This shekel was struck by the obscure Byblian king 'Ozba'al under Persian domination. The obverse advertises the naval power of the city by depicting one of its galleys carrying warriors. Indeed, the terrifying power of the Persian fleet was largely due to the ships and sailors drawn from Phoenician cities like Byblos. The scene of the lion attacking a bull on the reverse and other variations on this animal fight theme were a commonplace of Near Eastern and especially Persian decorative art.

Treffliches Exemplar, von grosser Seltenheit"). Die Zahl 72 auf dem Rv. ist eine Wertangabe und zeigt das Verhältnis zum römischen Pfund. Nachdem Diocletian in seiner Münzreform den Aureus auf 1/60. des Pfundes festgelegt hatte, führte Constantin d. Gr. um 309 n. Chr. eine neue Goldmünze mit dem Sollgewicht von 4,55 g. = 1/72 des Pfundes ein, die wir unter dem Namen Solidus kennen

A copy of the famous and unique medallion from the Arras Hoard, showing Constantius entering the city of London after recovering Britannia from Allectus.The current piece is not stamped, but was presumably one of a series of copies of medallions from the Arras Hoard made by the Parisian dealer M.
