By the school of Simon van der Passe, after a vignette published by Guillaume Rouillé. Engraved circa 1640. + ANTONIVS + DE ◊ LEVA, helmeted and armored bust of de Leyva right, wearing Collar chain / ◊ NOE · FLA * PROEFET (Noah, who prophesied the flood), bust of Noah facing slightly right, with eyes uplifted toward God. Unpublished, but cf. G. Rouillé, “Promptuarii Iconum Insigniorum,” (1553) (for prototype engraving of de Leyva; see image below); cf. Mitchiner, Jetonsvol. 3, 4872-5 (for other counters from this series); and cf. H. Farquhar, “Silver Counters of the Seventeenth Century,” in NC XVI (1916), pp. 183-4 (for additional counters with biblical scenes). Good VF, toned, a few minor marks. Extremely rare, artistic, and historically interesting.

Hailing from a family in Navarre, Antonio de Leyva made his military debut in the Alpujarras in 1502, during the revolt of theMudéjares from Granada, and served shortly thereafter under the Gran Capitán as his career during the Italian Wars began. After sustaining an injury at the battle of Ravenna in 1512, he fought under the Marquis of Pescara, and suffered at setback in the campaign of Provence. This failure, however, was followed by a valiant effort in Pavia, where he commanded the garrison there against a siege undertaken by François I of France. During the four-month siege, de Leyva was able to garner enough time for the Spanish and Imperial forces to reorganize and ultimately subdue the French forces. Following this effort, he succeeded to the role of commander-in-chief of the Imperial army in Milano, and was appointed by Emperor Carlos V/I as the governor there until his death the following year.

The image to the right is a vignette taken from Guillaume Rouillé's 1553 work Promptuarii Iconum Insigniorum, which carried miniature engravings and biographies of famous people throughout history, from antiquity up to the 16th century. This work certainly serves as the basis on which the gaming counter above was based when created by the school of Simon van der Passe, a famous engraver and manufacturer of various counters in the first half of the 17th century. Known extensively for their work in the numerous British series of cast counters, the school also produced some very artistic pieces with intricate engravings, such as those in this series which combines various historical figures as the obverse design with characters from Bible as the reverse design. As they featured a nonpartisan theme, these counters could be passed to either side during the rising tensions of the English Civil War without giving offense. Seldom seen, these pieces represent a high point in artistry and presentation on a miniature scale.

Ciao Giampiero.

Certo che per essere un gettone di metà del XVII secolo ha lo spessore del bordo insolitamente regolare e pronunciato, avuto riguardo anche al fatto che pesando 2,23 grammi ed avendo un diametro di 25 mm., il tondello deve essere molto sottile.

Quel bordo e le lettere delle legende sembrerebbero ottenuti con tecniche di coniazione ottocentesche.

Fra l'altro, il ritratto del condottiero inciso sul gettone, non è per nulla somigliante a quello indicato nella sua iconografia ufficiale:

Il ritratto sul gettone è preso da una vignetta di Guillaume Rouillé, scrittore e umanista francese del XVI sec. famoso per la sua passione per la stampa e l’iconografia.

Direi che nella vignetta modello per il gettone è stato ‘rifatto’ il nasone del ritratto ufficiale del De Leyva (a destra), ma, nel complesso, una certa somiglianza è mantenuta.

I de Leyva avevano legami con Pavia dove abito (in provincia) e con Monza, la mia città natale.

Infatti Antonio de Leyva, duca di Terranova e principe di Ascoli nonché generale durante le guerre in Italia al quale è dedicato questo gettone, si distinse nella battaglia di Pavia del 1525 combattuta tra l’esercito francese guidato personalmente dal re Francesco I e l’armata imperiale, costituita principalmente da fanteria spagnola e lanzichenecchi tedeschi, di Carlo V. Per i suoi meriti fu da questi investito del feudo di Monza.

Martino de Leyva, bisnipote di Antonio e per diritto ereditario conte di Monza, sposò Virginia Maria Marino nel 1574 e dall’unione nacque Marianna de Leyva, meglio nota come la Monaca di Monza (Milano, 4 dicembre 1575 – Milano, 17 gennaio 1650).

Neanche un anno dopo aver dato alla luce la figlia, nel 1576 Virginia Maria Marino morì di peste a Milano, lasciando eredi universali in parti uguali Marianna e il figlio avuto dal precedente matrimonio (a Marianna spettò la proprietà di palazzo Marino e metà del patrimonio da dividere con Marco Pio di Savoia) e l’usufrutto al marito vedovo Martino de Leyva. Da qui nacque una serie di controversie legali e malversazioni finalizzate a privare la piccola Marianna dell'eredità materna e anche per questo la ragazza fu indotta a entrare nel convento di Santa Margherita in Monza. Qui ebbe inizio la sua movimentata vita monastica che ne fece la protagonista del famoso scandalo che sconvolse la città agli inizi del XVII secolo.
