Stater (Silver, 10.98 g 11), c. 300. Youthful Dionysos, wearing long chiton and holding a thyrsos in his left hand, riding on panther leaping to left. Rev. Hermes, nude but for headband and cloak hanging over his shoulders, standing left, his right foot on a rock, leaning forward and tying the laces of the sandal on his right foot; to left, upright kerykeion. BMC 1. Franke/Marathki 117 var. Gulbenkian 569. Kraay/Hirmer 553. Le Rider p. 35, 266, pl. IX, 11 (this coin). Svoronos 6. Extremely rare. Of exceptional late classical style. Attractively toned. Some metal faults, otherwise, extremely fine.
From the collection of C. Gillet, 1022, and from the Phaestus Region Hoard of 1953 (IGCH 152). The gods on this coin are perfect examples of the late classical artistic style of the later 4th century. Dionysos has perfect parallels from Greek painting, as on late Attic and Campanian Red Figure pots, and on the famous mosaic from the House of the Masks on Delos (LIMC III, sv. Dionysos 430-434). Hermes reflects a more sculptural tradition, and is probably the best representation we have of the famous Hermes tying his sandal by Lysippos, otherwise only known from later marble copies with extraneous supports (LIMC V, sv. Hermes, 958-960).
