Il mitico fondatore di Efeso era ritenuto un principe di Atene di nome Androclo che dovette lasciare il suo paese dopo la morte di suo padre, il re Codro. Secondo la leggenda, fondò Efeso nel luogo in cui divenne realtà l'oracolo di Delfi ("Un pesce e un cinghiale ti indicheranno la via"). Successivamente storici greci tra cui Strabone ed Erodoto attribuirono la fondazione mitologica della città a Efos, la regina delle Amazzoni.

La dea greca Artemide e la grande dea anatolica Cibele furono identificate insieme come Artemide di Efeso, venerata nel tempio che porta il suo nome e ritenuta una delle sette meraviglie del mondo. Secondo Pausania il tempio fu costruito da Efeso, figlio del dio fluviale Caystrus, prima dell'arrivo degli Ioni.

Tyre lost its prized status as official Roman colony and "Metropolis" due to suspected sympathy towards the usurper Macrinus, this despite the fact that Tyre had supported Septimius Severus in the civil wars of 193-194.

Although being known with Ares facing right, the type with Ares facing left along with a reverse legend mentioning the strategos is indeed rare, with the example in Kraft being the only other one known. Kraft cites a coin in the Waddington collection (6332---as Metropolis in Phrygia), which has a similar reverse reading of ЄΠI CTP KAΛ ӨAΛΛOY (misread as KΛA), though the type features Septimius Severus standing between his two sons, Caracalla and Geta. The other example cited by Kraft is the coin in the Copenhagen collection (910), which features the aforementioned statue of Ares facing right, with the legend TΩN ЄN IΩNIA. Although rare as a reverse type, this obverse die was also used to strike coins for Smyrna, Hypaepa and Magnesia (see Kraft pp. 176-7 and pl. 76).
