A very important issue and one of just very few coins to show Acrocorinth. Very fine.

L'Acrocorinto (greco Ακροκόρινθος), traducibile come "Corinto alta", è l'acropoli dell'antica Corinto. Si trova su uno sperone roccioso che domina la città ...

La sede degli dei. Secondo la mitologia, Bellerofonte, principe di Corinto, aveva dedicato tutta la zona a Elios, il dio del sole. Acrocorinto era la parte privilegiata dell'area di 240 acri donata da Bellerofonte alla dea Afrodite. Ma Afrodite non fu molto commossa da questo dono e a sua volta lo offrì a Medea (figlia di Eete, re della Colchide, figlio di Helios) che costruì un tempio sulla sommità di Acrocorinto in onore della dea. Così, nell'antichità, Acrocorinto era dedicato al culto di Afrodite.

Un mito corinzio del II secolo d. C. racconta che Briareo, uno degli Ecatonchiri (figure della mitologia greca con cento mani), fece da arbitro in una disputa tra Poseeidone ed Elio e stabilì che l’istmo sarebbe toccato al dio del mare e l’acropoli di Corinto al dio del Sole.

Secondo la mitologia più remota fu Bellerofonte, principe di Corinto, ad aver dedicato tutta la zona a Elios, il dio del sole. Acrocorinto era la parte privilegiata dell'area di 240 acri donata da Bellerofonte alla dea Afrodite, che però non apprezzò particolarmente lieta questo dono. Bronzo di Traiano (Filadelfia, Cilicia), che raffigura sul rovescio un’aquila ad ali chiuse in piedi a destra in un tempio distilo; sul frontone un’aquila in piedi, di fronte, ad ali spiegate (Leu Numismatik, Auction 4).

The city of Philadelphia was founded by the Graeco-Armenian King Antiochos IV in honor of his sister-wife Iotape Philadelphos.

Come ricorda la didascalia del bronzo precedente, la città di Filadelfia in Cilicia fu fondata dal re greco-armeno Antioco IV in onore di sua sorella-moglie Iotapa Philadelphos. Antioco IV fu nominato re di Commagene nel 38 da Caligola, che gli fece sposare la sorella Giulia Iopata I. Dall'unione nacquero Gaio Giulio Archelao Antioco Epifane, Callinico e Giulia Iopata II. Iotapa I morì prima del 72 e il marito fondò in onore della moglie la città di Iotape (ora Aytap, in Turchia). Sono state rinvenute monete dell'epoca con l'iscrizione ‘ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑ ΙΩΤΑΠΗ ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΟΣ', cioè ‘REGINA IOTAPA FILADELFIA’, a dimostrazione del matrimonio con Antioco IV.

COMMAGENE. Æ (25mm, 15.39 g). Countermark applied after AD AD 69. Crossed cornucopia in rectangular countermark on a Commagene bronze of Iotape (RPC I 3858). Howgego 403. Host VF, c/m VF, glossy green patina, scratches, slight chip in patina at edge.

This coin was overstruck on an earlier issue of Nero from Apollonierum (RPC I 3045), with traces of the ethnic and the emperor's name still visible on the obverse and reverse.

Di zecca non provinciale ( Roma ) una particolare costruzione, apparentemente con avanportico colonnato ( o balaustra ? ) e pareti in muratura piena .

Copertura a falde con importante frontone con statue, che aggetta a cornicione ai lati .

Da un bel denario di Ottaviano, passato ieri l'altro in asta RomaNum. 93 al n, 941 .

OYAΛЄPIAN[OC] Laureate, draped and cuirassed busts of Valerian I and Gallienus facing one another; below and between them, bareheaded, draped and cuirassed bust of Valerian II to right. Rev. NIKOM[HΔЄΩN] - TPIC NЄΩKO/PΩN Three temples; two seen in perspective facing left and right; the one above seen from front with Demeter standing facing within, holding grain ears and torch; in the middle, erected serpent and altar.
