Oricalco di Caracalla (Gangra-Germanicopolis) che raffigura sul rovescio una vista dell'acropoli della città con due edifici più piccoli, con tetti a punta, tra due grandi torri; tutti gli edifici hanno l’ingresso e quello più piccolo a destra è visto in mezza prospettiva; un muro tra la torre e l'edificio di sinistra (Leu 11 & 12).

A beautifully struck example with an exceptional architectural reverse. Very minor smoothing on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Extremely rare. An issue of tremendous interest and fascination, surface somewhat porous, otherwise very fine / good very fine. Ex Spink & Son sale 40, 1984, 244.

 

Secondo la tradizione mitologica greca, quando la carestia colpì la Cilicia, il figlio di una donna fenicia di nome Paphos e di un siriano di nome Sandokos navigò verso Cipro in cerca di terre più fertili. Al suo arrivo nel sud-ovest di Cipro, Kinyras fondò la città di Paphos in onore di sua madre e costruì un tempio dedicato ad Afrodite, la dea che lo aveva guidato nel suo viaggio. Afrodite stessa era strettamente associata al sito di Paphos. Si credeva che quando nacque dalla schiuma del mare, Afrodite sbarcò a Cipro in un promontorio vicino a Paphos. Il tempio di Afrodite della città - in realtà Astarte fenicia, che i Greci consideravano una forma della loro dea dell'amore - era già famoso ai tempi di Omero e aveva una reputazione per il suo oracolo. I suoi sacerdoti, conosciuti come i Kinyradai, rivendicavano la discendenza da Kinyras ed esercitavano il potere dei re nella città.

Siromos(?), il sovrano di Paphian nominato su questo statere si pensa sia stato un re Kinyrad della fine del quinto secolo a. C., ma quasi nulla si sa del suo regno. I tipi di moneta alludono sia alle caratteristiche geografiche del suo regno sia al culto di Afrodite a Paphos. Il tipo di dritto raffigura un toro dal volto umano - il solito mezzo greco per rappresentare un dio fluviale - che quasi certamente rappresenta il fiume Bokaros. La foce di questo piccolo fiume formava il porto di Paphos. Il tipo del rovescio rappresenta un astragalo (nocca). Gli astragali erano lanciati in modo simile ai dadi e venivano spesso usati in modo rituale per divinare la volontà degli dei. Qui si pensa che l'astragalo indichi il metodo con cui l'oracolo di Afrodite determinava le risposte alle domande che gli venivano poste.

Bronzo di Augusto (Teos, Ionia) che raffigura sul diritto un tempio tetrastilo posto su due gradini, con la testa nuda di Augusto a destra al suo interno. Sul rovescio Dioniso in piedi di fronte, testa a sinistra, con un cantaro nella mano destra e un tirso nella sinistra (Leu, Web Auction 15).

Lot 1156. IONIA. Teos. Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 19 mm, 5.38 g, 1 h), circa 27-10 BC. ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ ΚΤΙΣΤΗΣ Tetrastyle temple set on two steps; within, bare head of Augustus to right. Rev. THIΩN Dionysos standing front, head to left, holding kantharos in his right hand and thyrsos in his left. BMC 69. RPC I 2511. Rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. Slightly smoothed, otherwise, good very fine.

This interesing issue shows that Teos hailed Augustus as its (re-)founder (ΚΤΙΣΤΗΣ). Unfortunately, we do not know on what occasion the Teians bestowed this great honor upon the first emperor, but it is worth noting that a Teian inscription also records the constitution of penteteric Dionysiaka Kaisarea, games held every five years in honor of Dionysos and Augustus (CIG II 3082).

The reverse ΓΕΝΕΙ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΩΝ literally translates as 'to the dynasty of emperors'. Thus, the temple shown on the coin was likely dedicated to the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
