Rara Litra Timoleontea

Sará domani in asta da Bertolami al lotto 211 una litra attribuita al periodo timoleoteo classificata come "very rare".

Non so quanti coni siano conosciuti per questa tipologia ma, se non sbaglio, gli esemplari conosciuti si contano sulle dita di una mano o poco piú per cui sarebbe una ghiotta occasione, sarebbe.

 

 

Posto per un confronto l'esemplare dell'asta Leu del 73

Dell'American Numismatic Society

e del Rizzo (n.7)

Esemplare che non mi convince per nulla, mia opinione.

Aggiungo l'esemplare  sng copenaghen 732 per avere il quadro completo di tutti gli esemplari conosciuti (4) al momento di cui il Cammarata ne conosceva solo due (Rizzo e Virzì) .

In definitiva la mia opinione è che o si tratta di un falso oppure la moneta seppur autentica in origine è stata così maldestramente ritoccata da renderla irriconoscibile come autentica (nel senso pieno del termine).

Se può aiutare, ho fatto un collage dell'esemplare Bertolami con uno passato da Lanz anni fa. 

La somiglianza è evidente al punto da ritenere la stessa "officina" di provenienza....

There are many transfer die fakes, they have incomplete reverse legende with damaged letters ΣΥΡ  Κ (K is damaged and looks like I) ΙΩΝ, should be ΣΥΡΑΚΚΟΣΙΩΝ.

There is in late die state a die flaw in the obverse transfer die at E connecting it with head of Zeus. 2 of these transfer die fakes were sold by fake seller restbazar at ebay and one by fake seller Franceschino to Hermann Twiehaus, his collection is now at university Münster and one was sold by Bertolami as fake. 

I own the transfer dies and bought the one struck with it and sold by Bertolami as fake.

There is at the moment an exhibition at uni Münster about Arethusa and there will be some information about fake in the collection Twiehaus, I loaned some of my Sicilian transfer dies for this exhibition, which were used to strike fake in the collection Twiehaus. in most cases it had been possible to connect the transfer die fakes with the transfer dies due to die flaws or die breaks in the transfer dies which were of course only in the transfer dies or that in my transfer die the dotted border and or the legend ltters and other details were wrong recut. I have from the authentic mother sometimes 2 dies, two identical herbessos obverse dies (no recut) details and 2 Naxos dies but on both the dotted border is different but of course always wrong recut. Recutting on each transfer die unique and exists so only on one transfer die and allows us to connect transfer die fakes struck with it directly to a die, if they have the identical wrong recut details. Often it is possible to even find the authentic mother of which imprints were taken to make the transfer dies. In other cases it is possible with die studies to reconstruct which details were in the dies at which die states, to see if there are bad details which should not be there individual characteristics of the mother or wrong recut details or die falws or die breaks in transfer die which are only in transfer dies or if details like here are missing which should be there.

To recognize Sicilain transfer die fakes is generally very easy, but to prove it without the transfer dies or the authentic mother is very difficult, you have to make a die study and for this you need many well preserved and struck coins from same dies at different die states and so annoying.
