Le emissioni di Geta ad Ilium

Ilium era un’altra importante città della Troade e sorgeva nell’area ove si riteneva localizzata la città di Troia. Nel periodo di Augusto, al contrario di Alessandria Troas, Ilium fu una zecca molto attiva. Augusto, introdotto nella Gens Julia, ebbe uno speciale interesse per Ilium (al pari di Giulio Cesare, che rivendicava una discendenza da Julus, figlio di Enea).

Geta compare sulle monete di Ilium sia da Cesare che da Augusto; oltre che da solo, è tuttavia raffigurato anche con Caracalla.

Si tratta per la maggior parte di monete del probabile valore di un asse (21-23 mm, peso medio di 8 esemplari 7.1g). L’emissione con il doppio ritratto è probabilmente un sesterzio (SNG Munchen 275 = 32 mm, 21.2 g).

Le tipologie prevalenti sono due: il fiume Scamandro disteso (fiume della Troade ricordato anche nell’Iliade) e Athena Ilias (che indossa una corazza con aegis). Che si tratti della raffigurazione dello Scamandro è attestato dalla legenda CKAMANΔPOC. Un’altra riferimento a Troia lo ritroviamo nella rappresentazione di Ettore, stante in abiti militari o su biga al galoppo.

Alcune emissioni riportano una particolare legenda di dritto: Π CEΠ ΑΔP ΓETAC K o Π CEΠ ΑΔPI ΓETAC KA. Non conosco la spiegazione del riferimento ad Adriano (ΑΔP); secondo un’ipotesi che mi è stata suggerita, così come Caracalla modificò il nome per legarlo alla dinastia degli Antonini, l’incisore potrebbe aver voluto legare quello di Geta ad Adriano.

Nulla esclude che si possa trattare invece di un errore della zecca.
