Ho difficoltà ad identificare questo bronzetto (3,8 g. e 13 mm) preso oggi. Al D. un volto barbuto a destra (Zeus, Asclepio o qualcun altro?), e apparentemente nessuna legenda. Al R. vedo un serpente attorcigliato su un bastone (o forse un tripode, non è chiarissimo), con le scritte (che qui devo latinizzare): ..KLEPIOY (sopra) e OPERO (0ppure OIGERO..) sotto.

Anch’io ho un esemplare di questo bronzo acquistato molto tempo fa in eBay.

MYSIA. Pergamon. Ae (Mid-late 2nd century BC). Obv: Laureate head of Asklepios right. Rev: AΣKΛHΠIOY / ΣΩTHPOΣ. Serpent-entwined staff. SNG von Aulock 1373. Condition: Very fine. Weight: 3.077 g. Diameter: 14-15 mm.

 

The famous Asklepieion (or Sanctuary of Asklepios) was located in Pergamon, about a mile south of the city’s acropolis. It was a world-renowned site to which people would travel in the hopes of finding a cure for their ailments. Archaeological surveys have found numerous terracotta body parts at the site, which must have been offerings given by these hopeful pilgrims.
