Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, sphinx seated left on amphora; APIΣTOTEIXH[Σ] in exergue. Bauslaugh, Posthumous, Series 59B, dies 69/176; Price 2409; HGC 6, 1139; SNG Ashmolean 2812 (same dies). Good VF, toned, minor die break on obverse, slightly off center on reverse. Very rare, only two examples cited by Bauslaugh, one additional in Pella, one in CoinArchives.

Commentaires sur l'état de conservation : Exemplaire sur un flan extrêmement large et complet à l’usure régulière. Très jolie patine de collection ancienne avec des reflets bleutés irisés au revers. N° dans les ouvrages de référence : BMC.  - Cop.-  - Aulock-  - GC.4607 var. - MP.2412
Titulature avers : Anépigraphe.
Description avers : Tête imberbe d’Héraklès à droite, coiffé de la léonté.
Description revers : Zeus aétophore, nu jusqu’à la ceinture assis à gauche, les jambes croisées sur un siège ornementé, tenant un aigle de la main droite tendue et un sceptre long de la main gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, un sphinx, levant l’antérieur droit au-dessus d’une amphore couchée.

Commentaire à propos de cet exemplaire : Même coin de droit que l’exemplaire du trésor de Pamphylie (n° 2412, pl. 46).
Commentaires : Le monnayage au nom et au type d’Alexandre ne commence pas avant le début du IIIe siècle avant J.-C. entre 290 et 275 avant J.-C. mais devient important après 250 avant J.-C.. Le monnayage connaît un nouveau regain de fabrication après la bataille de Magnésie du Méandre en 190 avant J.-C. Le monnayage semble s’arrêter vers 165 avant J.-C. Le monétaire Asklépiadhès ne semble pas avoir exercé de magistrature ailleurs qu’à Chios.

Historique : L'île et la ville de Chios étaient situées en face de la ville d'Erythrée. Le monnayage commença au milieu du VIe siècle avant J.-C. et dura, pour le style archaïque, jusqu'au milieu du IVe siècle avant J.-C. Chios était un port et un centre commercial réputés. La cité semble avoir participé à la révolte de l'Ionie contre le joug perse au début du Ve siècle avant J.-C. (500-494 AC.), (Hérodote VI. 26). Une décade plus tard, elle envoie une flotte de dix-sept bateaux à Xerxès qui s'apprête à envahir la Grèce, (Hérodote, VII. 95). L'île semble avoir appartenu à la ligue de Délos après 477 avant J.-C. La cité est l'alliée d'Athènes. Chios quitte l'alliance en 412 avant J.-C. A partir du IIIe siècle, Chios perdit son autonomie qu'elle ne retrouva qu'après la paix d'Apamée en 188 avant J.-C. La cité fut ravagée par Mithridate VI du Pont en 86 pour avoir soutenu les Romains. Sylla restaura la ville en 84 avant J.-C. et la déclara alliée de Rome.

Salve.

Il titolo regale non compare mai nelle monete di Alessandro coniate quando era in vita e quindi il "BASILEOS" del rovescio è già un’indicazione che la moneta è postuma. In questo caso poco dopo la morte del Grande, sotto Antipatro (ca 322-320 a. C.)

Il Price riporta sei esemplari e le foto di tre di essi.

Tutti gli esemplari pesano più di 17 g, caratteristica condivisa da 36 dei 39 esemplari della collezione ANS (American Numismatic Society). Uno dei tetradrammi di peso inferiore a 17 g (16,73 g, 16,61 g, 16,42 g) pesa come questo.
