Alexandreia mint. Struck circa 306-300 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing elephant skin, aegis around neck with tiny Δ in scales / AΛEΞANΔPO[Y], Athena Alkidemos advancing right; to right, Corinthian helmet right, ΔI, and eagle standing right on thunderbolt. CPE 72; Svoronos 169; Zervos Issue 31, dies 528/b (this coin referenced); SNG Copenhagen 30; Westmoreland 45 (this coin). Attractively toned, some tiny flan flaws. Near EF.

CPE 83; Svoronos 153; Zervos Issue 61, dies unlisted; SNG Copenhagen –. Deep iridescent tone, minor die wear on obverse. Good VF.

Tolomeo I Sotere, figlio di un nobile macedone, fu amico e intimo di Alessandro III il Grande fin dall'infanzia e lo accompagnò nella sua grande carriera di conquista, dal 333 al 323 a.C. Alla morte di Alessandro, nel 323 a.C., a Tolomeo fu concessa la preziosa satrapia d'Egitto, la più ricca delle province un tempo persiane. Unico tra i Diadochi ("successori"), si accontentò della sua sfera d'influenza e non rischiò tutto per succedere ad Alessandro. Tuttavia, non disdegnò di usare l'immagine e la reputazione del grande conquistatore per consolidare la propria posizione. Dirottò il corteo funebre di Alessandro mentre tornava in Macedonia e fece seppellire formalmente il suo corpo imbalsamato a Menfi, in Egitto; in seguito, il corpo fu trasferito in uno splendido mausoleo ad Alessandria. Tolomeo dichiarò la propria regalità nel 305/4 a.C. e fu l'unico dei successori di Alessandro a morire serenamente, nel suo letto, nel 282 a.C., dopo aver fondato una dinastia che sarebbe durata tre secoli.
