La caratteristica di questo mio bronzetto ¼ AE è di presentare il titolo regale del sovrano per esteso (BAΣIΛEΩΣ tra il gorytos e la clava) e il nome del sovrano (lettere di ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ visibili in parte sotto la clava) nonostante le piccole dimensioni (1,615 g, 12 mm).

In genere sui bronzi il titolo regale è abbreviato in BA, oppure compare il titolo regale BAΣIΛEΩΣ senza il nome del sovrano.

Macedonian shield; race torch on boss / Β Α / Σ Ι, Crested Macedonian helmet with cheek guards; in bottom field, trident head right to left of caduceus right, both above monogram. Price 420. VF, glossy, light green patina. Scarce.
The race-torch - traditional badge of Amphipolis - seems not to be one of the more commonly seen devices on the shield-boss.

Bronzo half-unit scudo macedone/elmo macedone Price 420 (dati e foto dal testo).

Il bronzo è di una zecca incerta della Macedonia, possibilmente Anfipoli per la fiaccola, simbolo tradizionale di questa città, al centro dello scudo.

La fiaccola è il simbolo tipico del rovescio delle monete di Anfipoli, a ricordo del culto di Artemide Tauropolos o Brauronia che era specialmente venerata in questa città e in onore della quale si svolgevano le gare della fiaccola o Lampadephoria.

Con questo nome si intende un antico tipo di staffetta in cui i corridori si passavano una torcia come testimone. La corsa si svolgeva solitamente a piedi, ma a volte anche a cavallo. La squadra vincitrice della gara era la prima che attraversava il traguardo, a condizione che la fiaccola fosse ancora accesa.

Goldstater, unbekannte Münzstätte (Babylon?), um 320. Kopf der Athena im korinthischen Helm, mit Perlenkette, nach rechts, auf der Helmkalotte Schlange. Perlkreis; Rs: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Nike stehend nach links, in der linken Hand Stylis, in der rechten Hand Kranz. Links unten im Feld Stier angreifend nach links, rechts unten im Feld Φ. Abschnitt. Price -; SNG Alpha Bank -; SNG München -. 8,52g. St. 5. Beidseits minimale Prägelücken, auf der Rs. eine minimale Schürfspur links am Rand, ansonsten fast vorzüglich.Das 2. Exemplar (vgl. Elsen 93, 15. Sept. 2007, 221). Der Magistrat F ist in Babylon belegt, allerdings mit einer typologisch abweichenden Vs. (Greif auf dem Helmkessel). Den Stier findet man bei einer deutlich jüngeren Serie, die Price mit leiser Skepsis nach Tyras legte (Price 1214), und bei Goldstateren des Lysimachos aus Chalkedon (H. Seyrig, Essays in Honor of Stanley Robinson [Oxford 1968] Taf. 25, 25). Beide haben mit unserem Stück weder zeitlich noch stilistisch zu tun. Die Zuweisungsfrage muß also vorerst offen bleiben.

Zecca di Pario (Parion in greco, Parium in latino).

Pario era una città della Misia situata vicino a Lampsaco, nei pressi dell’Ellesponto. Dopo la morte di Alessandro Magno la città passò sotto il dominio di Lisimaco e in seguito sotto la dinastia degli Attalidi. Dopo che Attalo III, l’ultimo re di Pergamo, nel 133 a. C. lasciò in eredità il suo regno a Roma, nel 129 a. C. la regione entrò a far parte della provincia romana dell’Asia.

La città era famosa per il suo santuario di Eros in cui era ospitata una statua di Prassitele rappresentante il dio alato. La città possedeva anche un oracolo di Apollo trasportato dalla città vicina di Adrastea dove era stato eretto dall'architetto Ermocreonte in epoca ellenistica.

Il Price riporta sette tetradrammi della zecca di questa città, tutti con il toro che attacca a sinistra.
