Lot description: Andreas, Strategos, circa 550-650. Seal (Lead, 21 mm, 8.81 g, 12 h). See Zacos I 1375 for type, cf. Triton XI, (2008) 1117. Particularly artistic early byzantine seal with an unusual depiction. Good very fine. The resemblance of this seal with the Zacos I 1375 of the Cubicularios Andreas, can lead us to the assumption that both seals are from the same person. If this is correct, then the seal in the present auction should be a little later than the one in Triton, after Andreas was promoted from Cubicularios to General. Starting Price: 100 CHF Cita Awards

Silver Denarius (4.06 g), 82 BC. Rome. Laureate head of Apollo right, scepter at shoulder. Reverse P CREPVSI in exergue, Soldier on horse rearing right, hurling spear; behind, V. Crawford 361/1a; Sydenham -; Crepusia 1c. Needle sharp, lustrous and delicately toned. A superb example. Nearly Mint State. The moneyer's family is little known, and the moneyer himself is only know from his coins. This issue of denarii was quite massive, however, with controls numbers reaching DXX. According to Crawford, the control numerals on the reverse form a continuous sequence with no control-numeral having more than one die. Crawford 361/1a, the only variety without obverse control, is extremely rare while the rest of P. Crepusius' denarii are all quite common. An issue of great importance and fascination, struck on a full flan and extremely fine Unlike most Seleucid kings, Seleucus I struck a very large quantity of gold coins. However, the vast majority was issued in the name of Alexander III, and employed his familiar design that paired the helmeted head of Athena with Nike holding a wreath and stylis. To those we may add a significantly smaller group of staters bearing that same design, but issued in the name of Seleucus.Beyond these, there are three extraordinary rarities: distaters of the Alexandrine type bearing the name of Seleucus, darics and double-darics bearing on their obverse a portrait of Alexander III in elephant scalp and on their reverse a standing Nike, and staters with the laureate head of Apollo and a biga of elephants driven by Artemis, who draws an arrow in her bow.The latter type, offered here, is currently known by issues from Susa and from an uncertain mint in Bactria. The Bactrian issue – though fascinating and of historical interest – is of a rustic style in comparison with the Susa issue, which is struck with an obverse die engraved in excellent Greek style. The example offered here shares the obverse die of the other recorded example from Susa, though it was struck with a different reverse die. The previously known example has in its fields the letter K and a spearhead, whereas the present coin has a horizontal anchor, a bee, and the letters IS (all of which are known, separately, from other Seleucus I issues of Susa). When this stater was struck the Apollo die appears to have been in a later state than when it produced the one recorded by Houghton and Lorber, thus assuring it is a subsequent issue. Gulbenkian 914 (same obverse die, no A on reverse). A magnificent specimen of the highest Hellenistic style. Beautifully toned. Extremely fine Ex Peter Guber Collection. In the generation after Alexander the Great, Pyrrhus of Epirus was admired as the most chivalrous of the Hellenistic kings. After failing to win a share of Alexander’s dismembered empire, he courted fame by championing the western Greeks against their barbarian enemies. In 281 he took an army of 25,000 men and 20 elephants to Italy to assist the city of Tarentum in its war against Rome. He inflicted two serious defeats on the Romans and marched close to Rome, but did not succeed in imposing peace. In 278 he crossed over into Sicily to confront the Carthaginians. He nearly expelled them from the island, but abandoned his campaign after two years to return to Italy. There he won a last victory over the Romans in 275. But by this time his army had shrunk by two thirds, and he was forced to withdraw to his own kingdom, bequeathing the term Pyrrhic victory to describe a victory rendered hollow by its excessive cost in blood or treasure. After a few further adventures in Greece Pyrrhus perished in a street fight in Argos. Pyrrhus’ coinage was as exceptional as his career. It was issued on a very limited scale; it was strikingly artistic; and it did not promote Pyrrhus in the way that his contemporaries used their coinage to advertise their own accomplishments and kingship. His tetradrachm honors the principal gods of Epirus, Zeus Naios and his consort Dione. Zeus was worshipped as the god of thunder, to whom the oak tree was sacred; Dione (whose name is simply a feminine form of Zeus) was perhaps an earth goddess or a double of Aphrodite. Their cult center at Dodona was famous for its oracle, and Pyrrhus founded a festival in their honor called the Naia. The aesthetic qualities and western fabric of Pyrrhus’ silver coinage have led numismatists to posit a western origin, at Locri Epizephyrii in Bruttium. The types of the tetradrachms, however, suggest that they might have been struck in connection with the first celebration of the Naia in Epirus. Estimated Value: $ 60,000 ILLUSTRAZIONE: AFRODITE ADAGIATA SUL GREMBO DELLA MADRE DIONE, SCULTURA IN BRONZO OTTOCENTESCA ISPIRATA ALLA SCULTURA DAL FRONTONE ORIENTALE DEL PARTENONE, OPERA DI FIDIA E AIUTI DEL 435 A.C. Leu 54, 28 April 1992, 159. Kelenderis was a city in Cilicia that was founded by Samians at some point just prior to 700 BC. While there are some archaeological remains, the best known relics of the city are its coinage. Most of the coins of Kelenderis celebrate its horse-riding elite: here they show us the point in the kalpe - a race for mares - when, in the last lap, the horseman would run alongside his horse, leap on to its back and then leap off again, all the while holding on to its reins. This kind of event was particularly popular in areas where horses were raised and where horse owning was an aristocratic pursuit: such scenes are often shown on the coinage of Tarentum, which was famous for its aristocratic cavalry. VF. See A. Ellis-Evans, "The Coinage and History of Achaiion in the Troad" in REA 119 (2017), for a comprehensive reassessment of the attribution of this coin, which had previously been attributed to Achilleion. Ellis-Evans's multidisciplinary approach, strongly supported by recent archaeological evidence, persuasively argues that Herodotos' identification of Achilleion as a polis was incorrectly interpreted by later authors; in fact, the site was little more than a fort used by Mytilene to challenge the Athenians at Sigeion, and was only occupied periodically. Also, in contrast to earlier scholars' views that Achaiion was under constant domination by Tenedos, thus preventing an issue of coinage by the city, Ellis-Evans shows that the history of Achaiion mirrors that of other settlements in the Troad that were able to produce coinage on occasions when the power of Tenedos was diminished when it was challenged by its rivals in the region.
